Potsdam (dpa / bb) – The risk of forest fires was rated as high for large parts of Brandenburg on Sunday. According to the State Ministry for the Environment, the highest danger level 5 applied to 7 of the 14 districts – this was particularly the case in the north of the state. Otherwise level 4 (high risk) applied. Only in the district of Spree-Neisse and the city of Cottbus in south-eastern Brandenburg was a medium risk (level 3) recorded.
There has been no significant precipitation in the past few days. Large forest fires have been raging in Brandenburg in recent weeks, some on areas contaminated with munitions. Some towns were also evacuated. According to the State Ministry for the Environment, human activity causes more than 90 percent of all forest fires with up to 99 percent of the areas damaged by forest fires.
In the coming week the weather will be much more changeable and rain is likely. The German weather service predicted individual heat thunderstorms for Monday in Berlin and Brandenburg. It’s supposed to be muggy with a maximum temperature of between 28 and 30 degrees.
