Belgium finishes 6th in Santiago de Chile
The Belgian women’s 7-a-side team did not achieve the feat of qualifying for the 2023 World Series. During the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series held this weekend in Chile, the BelSevens finished 6th with victories against Papua New Guinea and Argentina.
The task was going to be complicated for the Belgian team in Santiago de Chile. Starting at 11, our compatriots quickly lost Loes Hubrecht to injury. After their failed victory against Papua New Guinea in their first group match, the BelSevens then bowed slightly against Argentina (10-15) before suffering the law of Poland (12-36 ) in the last pool match.
Emiel Vermote’s players nevertheless remained in the race, qualified for the quarter-finals. However, they fell on Japan: future finalists of the tournament against the Poles, the Japanese beat the Belgians 31 to 0.
Sunday’s day was therefore placed under the sign of the classification matches. Used by the Belgian team to take revenge on Argentina, with a 12-10 success! In the match for 5th place, she could not take the measure of Kazakhstan and ended her weekend in Chile with a 5-17 loss.
