On this day 48 years ago, the barbaric Turkish invasion entered the second of the phase. On August 14, 1974, the Turkish forces, despite the truce that had been agreed upon, expanded their expansionist plans, repeatedly violating every rule of international legitimacy.
Nicosia (Glaukos Cleridis) and Athens (Konstantinos Karamanlis) left Famagusta undefended. In the end they also lost Morphou, ordering a disorderly retreat…
So today marks 48 years of pain, uprooting and refugees. On that day, which still goes down as a black date in the modern Cypriot tragedy, the Turkish invasion forces occupied most of Mesaoria, Famagusta, Karpasia and most of the Morphou region in the west.
Today’s sad anniversary of the second phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus is commemorated amid a continuous offensive strategy and challenges by Turkey.
The status of the enclosed city of Famagusta, protected by Security Council resolutions 550 and 789, is grossly violated by Ankara’s discount policy.
The United Nations, with many resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council, demand respect for the independence, unity and territorial integrity of Cyprus, the return of persons to their homes and the withdrawal of foreign troops from the island, but all these resolutions , have been defiantly ignored by Turkey.
The Greek Cypriot side has repeatedly over the years requested respect for the resolutions and the return of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants, while it has also submitted proposals for this purpose, but all its efforts have met with the refusal of the Turkish side.
The EU side emphasizes that there is no other way than dialogue and the only option is the solution of the Cypriot problem according to the parameters of the UN, calling on the Turkish Cypriot leadership to respond to the expectations of Turkish Cypriot individuals.
It remains committed to efforts to find a sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem, based on the agreed framework of the Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation with political equality, as provided for in the relevant Resolutions of the UN Security Council. A solution that reunites the homeland and the people, ending the occupation and its achievements.
Recently, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulidis, representing the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiades at a Famagusta commemoration event organized by the Municipality of the occupied city, said that Turkey’s illegal actions in the closed area of Varosia, “are part of a policy of creating and entrenching young people. of the soil.
These are actions contrary to the spirit and letter of the UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789 as well as the presidential statements of the Security Council when the issue of Famagusta was raised in closed sessions of the House.”
It is for this very reason, he said, that we expressed satisfaction for the recent adoption by the Security Council of the Resolution for the renewal of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus. A Resolution that repeats all the previous Resolutions regarding Cyprus, calls for finding an ILO solution in accordance with the UN framework and condemns the non-reversal of Turkish actions in the Varossia region.
He referred to the MoU that the government has pushed forward in recent months “with determination and method”, a package of Confidence Building Measures which he described as generous and bold, the implementation of which has been of mutual benefit to both communities. “We proposed the operation of Timbos airport under the administrative responsibility of the UN, with the return of the Famagusta region to the United Nations, so that with the solution of the Cyprus problem, it will be returned to its lawful inhabitants,” he said.
At the same time, “we proposed the operation of the port of Famagusta under its supervision, so that there is a control of the products entering the single market. In exchange, the implementation by Turkey of the additional protocol of the Customs Union vis-à-vis the Republic of Cyprus, and the obligation to open its ports and airports to ships and planes with the Cypriot flag”.
Unfortunately, he added, “the package of proposals in question was rejected by the Turkish side, which adheres to the policy of the two states. He also insists on the recognition of the status of sovereign equality of the T/k as a condition for the resumption of the corresponding effort to resolve the Cyprus problem”, adding that they are unacceptable which cannot and will not be accepted, since they are dichotomous and contrary to the goal of reunification.
He also referred to the counter-proposals of the T/k in the letter of the PtD, adding that the proposals “we will examine carefully, so as to establish whether there is a mutual will to hold a dialogue between the two sides. A technocratic process so that all proposals and their manner are evaluated.”
“Let the leadership of the Turkish Cypriots abandon their rational and maximalist explanations for two-state solutions. As it has finally shown the required will to start a dialogue on Confidence Building Measures”, concluded the Foreign Minister.
The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, shares the strong concerns of President Anastasiades regarding Turkey’s illegal actions in Varossia, while calling for the reversal of all illegal Turkish actions in Varosia from October 2020.
A written statement by the Government Representative Marios Pelekanos states that in response to the letter to the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, shares the strong concerns of President Anastasiades in her illegal actions. of Turkey in Varosia.
The President of the Commission reiterates the EU’s condemnation of the Turkish side’s decision to open the closed city of Varosia and the extension of the parallel stock, while requesting the reversal of all illegal Turkish actions in Varosia from October 2020.
At the same time, it reaffirms the EU’s support for the resolutions of the Security Council on the status of Varosia, underlining that the opposite attempt to settle any part of the city by persons other than its legal residents was unacceptable and calling for the transition of this area. in the administration of the United Nations.
Furthermore, President von der Leyen points out the need for all those involved to contribute to the effort for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, including its external aspects, on the basis of the agreed UN framework, as well as the European acquis and values, in the reports. the EU. The European Commission, the letter states, will continue to make efforts to create a climate that will favor the resumption of negotiations.
Finally, President von der Leyen’s letter restates the Commission’s support for the Confidence Building Measures proposed by the President of the Republic, which would, among other things, help restore trust between the two communities and facilitate efforts to return to the negotiating table, with the aim of resolving the Cyprus issue on the basis of a bizonal, legal federation with political equality, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions.
At the same time, the hope is expressed that the Turkish Cypriot side will respond constructively to the proposed MOUs.
