Swabian between hell and heaven
Cologne coach Steffen Baumgart (50) gave his keeper Marvin Schwäbe (27) two conspicuous slaps on the cheek and the back of his head on the way to the second half.
Schwäbe went through the full range of a goalkeeper’s life between hell and heaven in just under four minutes when 1. FC Köln made it 2-2 at cup winners RB Leipzig: First he made a bad mistake in Timo Werner’s long-range shot before the 0-1 (36th) , but then Schwäbe kept FC in the game against Christopher Nkunku with a monster reflex (40′). Florian Dietz made it 1:1 from a direct counterattack.
“If you don’t shoot as a striker, you can’t score. Marvin looked a bit unhappy there,” said coach Baumgart, “but then we’ll get straight to the main story – if you react like that as a goalkeeper afterwards, you’re there and you keep us in the game, that was a huge chance for Leipzig to make it 2-0 , then you have to say: hats off!”
Schwäbe took the first goal against himself immediately: “It was clearly my fault. I see the ball completely. The problem was that the ball was in the air for so long. I had two thoughts in my head and that can never end well as a goalkeeper. I can only thank the team that it went 2-2.”
How did Schwäbe see the scene when Werner shot?
“I judged the ball to be a bit firmer and faster, so I thought I would have to dive to the left and go down as well. Then the ball was on the move for so long that I thought I could take it from the front. You saw what came out of it,” says Schwäbe and emphasizes: “Of course it was nice for me to be able to give something back and help the team.”
For Schwäbe, the game in Leipzig was further proof that FC is a real team: “We stand together, if there is a mistake, we pat each other on the back. The fact that we are all there for each other is what makes us special.” That was a very, very good performance by the entire team.”
