Smuggler breaks control – three migrants die in an accident in Austria
Three migrants die in an accident in Austria
Two men and a woman died in the pickup truck while fleeing from the police. The smuggler, believed to be a Russian citizen, survived and was arrested.
Three people were killed in an accident involving an overcrowded smuggler vehicle in Burgenland, Austria, on Saturday morning. As the police announced, the van overturned while trying to flee from a police checkpoint at the Austrian-Slovakian border crossing in Kittsee. According to the information, two men and a woman were killed and several people, including children, were seriously injured.
The smuggler, presumably a Russian citizen, had been arrested and was being interrogated, said a police spokesman for the Austrian news agency APA. The vehicle with a Hungarian license plate was therefore traveling at excessive speed.
“The tragic death of three people today at the Kittsee/Jarovce border crossing shows once again the brutality and unscrupulousness of the smuggling mafia,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. «People are lured with completely false promises and risk their lives. Resolute action against this form of organized crime is more relevant and important than ever.”
In May, the Austrian Ministry of the Interior reported the dismantling of a smuggling ring that had smuggled tens of thousands of illegal immigrants, mostly Syrians, from Hungary to Austria. In the current year, the Ministry of the Interior has already arrested almost 330 people smugglers – 80 more than in the same period last year.
