The Russian Federation initially gave lessons to the Republic of Moldova regarding press freedom.
Russia, a “benchmark” when it comes to press freedom, criticizes the authorities in Chisinau for putting pressure on independent and opposition media resources. In a statement, Moscow denounced the “degradation” of the press in the Republic of Moldova and asks the government to revise its policy in relation to the rights and freedoms of the population.
“We continue to closely follow the situation in the Republic of Moldova, which is close to us and where a large number of our compatriots live. The degradation of press freedom in that country is a serious problem. Moldovan authorities put pressure on independent and opposition media resources. The information space is cleared of opinions and assessments unacceptable to the government,” the statement said.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticizes the fines applied to Russian TV stations rebroadcast in the Republic of Moldova.
“A question appears. To what extent does Chisinau’s policy in the information sphere correlate with its declared adherence to “democratic values”, including freedom of expression, mass media and freedom of expression? We call on the authorities of the Republic of Moldova to review their policy of restricting the fundamental rights and freedoms of their own citizens and to take the necessary measures to fully respect them”, the Russian Foreign Ministry also stated.
Moscow also commented on the decision of the Constitutional Court, four months after the banning of the St. George ribbon, to request the opinion of the Venice Commission in relation to this subject.
“Unfortunately, under the current conditions, we cannot count on the fact that the Venice Commission, which has repeatedly demonstrated a partisan and politicized approach, will handle the examination of the request of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova in a responsible and impartial manner” is stated in the quoted statement.
It is strange how Moscow, which has practically destroyed the free press by banning journalists who do not praise the Kremlin, criticizes Chisinau’s fight against propaganda and disinformation. This is in the context where all the media and NGOs inconvenient to Putin’s regime are qualified as “foreign agents” and outlawed, he writes. Open.
Russia warns of possible confiscation of its assets. Negotiations for a prisoner exchange
Any possible confiscation of Russian assets by the United States will completely destroy Moscow’s bilateral relations with Washington, the head of the North American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday, quoted by TASS – reports Reuters.
Russia’s relations with the West have deteriorated sharply since Moscow sent tens of thousands of soldiers to Ukraine on February 24, in what it called a “special military operation”, writes Agerpres.
The West has responded with unprecedented economic, financial and diplomatic sanctions, including an approximate freeze on Russia’s gold and valuable reserves, which amount to nearly $640 billion before February 24.
Senior Western officials, including European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, have suggested seizing the frozen reserves to help finance Ukraine’s future reconstruction.
We warn the Americans about the harmful consequences of such actions that will affect permanent bilateral relations, which is neither in their interest nor in our interest, Alexandr Darciev said in an interview with TASS. It was not immediately clear what asset this refers to (read more HERE).
