The siege of Brno lasted for one hundred and twelve long days, which became the last event of the Thirty Years’ War. On Kraví hora, however, people are now observing a shortened version of it. “Tomorrow we will strike the city for the last time. Brno must be ours even before noon rings in Petrová. If not, we will pull away,” said General Torstenson almost four centuries ago. In addition to the loud explosions of period cannons, the place is also occasionally heard by the cries of children who were too frightened by the realistic-looking battle.
But the busy program does not only cover the vast battlefield, where artillerymen, infantrymen and horsemen measure their strength. Around Kraví hora you will find various stalls, either with imitations of period objects or refreshments. But all eyes are on the battle and elaborate costumes. “Today we can watch up to two hundred enthusiasts who decided to show us what the siege of Brno looked like. I’m glad that I can enjoy such a spectacle,” says Brno mayor Markéta Vaňková.
