Journal Frankfurt News – Redesign of the Grüneburgweg begins
The redesign work on the Grüneburg multifunctional path will begin on Monday. Work is being done in three sections, starting with the section between Mitscherlichplatz and Reuterweg.
Divided into a total of three areas, the section between Mitscherlichplatz and Reuterweg is to be redesigned first. For this purpose, this area must be temporarily closed – according to the city, a measure required “to mark the junction areas in red”. At the same time, a so-called multifunctional strip with safety separating strips was applied to the road. This strip is intended to represent a connecting element between outdoor gastronomy, which may set up their tables and chairs there by arrangement, parking spaces and delivery zones. New signs will then be installed and the zebra crossings will be illuminated. Pedestrians would then have more space on the sidewalks.
The remodeling work is in line with the city council’s mandate for action, says head of the mobility department Stefan Majer (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen). The aim is “to massively expand the activities to promote cycling in the sense of a modern transport policy and at the same time to significantly improve the quality of life for pedestrians. We are strengthening residential areas and high-traffic areas by diverting through traffic and rearranging the available street space.”
What will then change for traffic?
As reported by the responsible office for road construction and development (ASE), the affected section will be identified after the work has been completed, the one-way street regulation from Mitscherlichplatz to the Feldbergstraße/Wolfsgangstraße junction will no longer apply, and cycling will in future also go there in mixed traffic in both directions. In order to prevent through traffic, the city will set up a so-called bus lock, which will ensure passage for the M36 bus line. Bicycle traffic is also allowed to go through the bus lock in both directions along the Grüneburgweg.
Further sections will follow in 2023
The construction work is initially scheduled to last until the end of the summer holidays. The redesign of the other two construction phases is to follow in 2023. The western section between Siesmayerstraße and Mitscherlichplatz is due in spring, and the eastern section between Reuterweg and Eschersheimer Landstraße will follow in the summer holidays.
