Moldova riskto be disconnected from the Russian gas delivered by Gazprom, because the Moldovagaz company does not have enough money to pay the bill in advance for the Russian giant, which amounts to 18 million dollars.
“We hope that we will be able to obtain an extinguishment of the payment term. The deadline is August 20th, but I think we can pay on August 22nd. The invoice to Gazprom for the month of August is 18 million dollars. We managed to collect 14 million dollars for the month of July”, said the director of Moldoavagaz, Ion Ceban, for G4Media.
Moldovagaz is a subsidiary of Gazprom, in which the Russian energy giant owns and controls the majority stake, while the state of the Republic of Moldova has only a 35.5% stake.
Ceban also said that he had requested a payment delay from Gazprom for the advance payment for August, but had not yet received any response from the Russian company. He also appealed to the Chisinau authorities to postpone VAT payments to the state.
Previously, Moldovagaz requested an increase in the tariff up to 29.48 lei [circa 1,5 euro] for one cubic meter of gasciting negative deviations and the fact that in August the price price is 1.458 of US dollars per thousand cubic meters of gasand in September it could reach 1,692 of US dollars.
On August 4, Athe National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) from Chisinau approved the increase in the gas tariff, for end consumers, from 18.62 lei to 23 lei for a cubic meter of gas.
Gazprom threatenedpreviously stated that he will not make concessions towards Moldova and that if the deadline for payment of the facts is not respected, then he will stop the deliveries within 48 hours.
In parallel, the Moldovan Public Property Agency signed the contract for financing and independent audit services of the debt of Moldova gaz towards Gazprom and Factoring-Finance with the companies Wikborg Rein Advokatfirma AS from Norway and Forensic Risk Alliance & Co from Great Britain.
“The two companies undertake to audit the debts for the gas delivered to the Republic of Moldova, right bank, until January 30, 2023. The contract was awarded through the negotiation procedure directly following the order of the Extraordinary Situations Commission of July 13, 2022,” it is stated in a press release from the Agency.
The director of Moldovagaz, Vadim Ceban, also stated that he did not participate in the selection of these audit companies. “The audit could be carried out in the middle of the year, until January 23, 2023. I think it is possible for these companies to fall within this deadline. We hope it will succeed, but it remains to be seen,” he concluded.
