The Adige of VeronaVenice under 50,000 inhabitants. Verona the most populous city in the Veneto.
Venice fell for the first time below the threshold of 50 thousand inhabitants in the historic center. According to the data of the statistical office of the Municipality, as of 10 August the resident population in the historic city districts (including Giudecca) is 49,997 people
The depopulation of Venice has been going on for decades and now seems to be an unstoppable process. Just 20 years ago the capital had 64,000 residents. Today it has dropped below 50,000 inhabitants. The statistical office speaks of the ‘historic center’, as the municipal area also includes the mainland town of Mestre, where many Venetians are present in the lagoon over the years due to the undoubted and evident difficulties linked to the situation of the city. But Venice is Venice, that is, it is the ancient city that we have all always known and admired and that come to visit bea all over the world. Mestre is another thing, another reality, completely different, so much so that it has asked Venice several times to break away.
But the decline of the Serenissima now seems. The needs and rhythms of today’s life make it increasingly difficult to carry out normal work activities, so the city today lives on tourism, with all the related activities, and on the role it has as the seat of the Council and the Regional Council of Veneto, even if for logistical reasons some representations have already been located on the mainland or in other provinces.
A decline, that of Venice, which if on the one hand can generate a certain sadness or nostalgia for the good old days and the past greatness, on the other it can represent a great opportunity for Verona which is today the largest city in the Veneto region by population. . A fact that is not decisive in itself, but that if made to weigh the city could play in favor of our city in various ways. But this depends a lot on our administrators and our representatives at various levels. The tools are there. Just think about it and have the political will to do something serious for the future of our city.
