Musical Cats return to Portugal with 16 shows scheduled – News
This timeless musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, adapted from TS Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, fuses music, dance and poetry. The scenography and costumes are also striking elements of the show, which tells the story of the meeting of the Jellicle cats at the Jellicle Ball, where Old Deuteronomy chooses the Jellicle cat who will ascend to “The Heaviside Layer” and be reborn in a new life.
In Portugal, the shows will take place on the stages of Campo Pequeno, in Lisbon, from February 14 to 19, 2023, and of Super Bock Arena, in Porto, from February 22 to 26, 2023.
Recall that Cats debuted in the West End (London) in 1981, where it was on the scene for 21 years. The following year the production crossed the ocean and for 18 years attracted millions of spectators to Broadway (New York), where it won seven Tony Awards, including “Best Musical”. The musical Cats has been performed in over 40 countries, translated into 15 languages and has been viewed by over 73 million people worldwide.
The original production of Cats reconvened in 2014 at the West End Theater in London. This meeting brought together the creative team, Trevor Nunn (Director), Gillian Lynne (Choreographer and Associate Director), John Napier (Designer) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (Composer).
Cats’ new European tour will pass through eight countries and will end in Portugal. This tour marks the 41st anniversary of the musical which has already destroyed all records of British music producer, composer and theater owner Andrew Lloyd Webber. The cast is made up of 29 artists, including Jacinta Whyte, the character Grizabella, who gives voice to “Memory”, Martin Callahgan, in the role of Old Deuteronomy (leader of the Jellicle cats) and Russell Dickson is dressed as Munkustrap (Musical Narrator).
It should be remembered that the first time that the musical Cats passed through Portuguese concert halls was in 2004, in Lisbon. The box office success recorded on that date would be repeated in 2006 and 2014, not only in Lisbon, but also in Porto.
The international tour of the Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Theater production of Cats is presented by Wow and David Ian for Crossroads Live.
