First hydrogen bunker permit from the Netherlands baked in IJmuiden
The first hydrogen bunker license was recently issued in the port of IJmuiden. With this permit, Windcat Workboats can bunker the Hydrocat 48 with hydrogen in the port of IJmuiden.
The bunkering of hydrogen for ships is an important development for making the ports of IJmuiden and Amsterdam and shipping more sustainable. Sailing on hydrogen contributes to the ambition of the province of Noord-Holland to be climate neutral by 2050. Windcat Workboats, together with the IJmond Environment Agency, Zeehaven IJmuiden NV and the Port of Amsterdam, investigated what was needed to make the bunkering of hydrogen possible. The IJmond Environment Agency has obtained an environmental permit for this activity, the municipality of Velsen.
Hydrocat 48
The Hydrocat 48 is used to transport to and from offshore wind farms for the construction and maintenance of wind farms. The ship sails from the IJmondhaven where the pilot has successfully bunkered hydrogen.
Key role of the North Sea Canal Area
The North Sea is seen as an important location for the supply of sustainable energy. A large part of the planned 21 GW offshore wind for 2030 will be realized and maintained from the North Sea Canal area. In order to meet this challenge, space infrastructure is needed for port and quayside. Investments are therefore planned to make the infrastructure suitable for the production, installation and maintenance of wind farms. Now that the ships heading for wind farms can bunker on hydrogen, working on this transition is made as clean as possible
