Cologne coach Baumgart confirms decision on Modeste’s successor – and is amused by rumours
Because he says he was amused by the speculation, coach Steffen Baumgart from Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln did not make the decision about a possible successor to striker Anthony Modeste. When asked whether it was clear that another striker would be signed, Baumgart said on Thursday: “There has been a decision. But I’ll keep to myself what it looks like. Because I think it’s interesting and funny who we’re supposed to be talking to or who we’re about to graduate with. I would like to keep this going. I love speculation.”

Most recently, players like Branimir Hrgota (Fürth), Jhon Cordoba (Krasnodar), Joel Pohjanpalo (Leverkusen) and Alexander Sörloth from the upcoming opponent RB Leipzig (3:30 p.m., watch live with WOW TV [Anzeige]) have been traded. Between the lines, however, it could be read that FC will probably not get anyone anymore. “We’ve already done our homework because the situation with Tony wasn’t entirely new,” Baumgart said, referring to the signings of Dortmund’s Steffen Tigges and Hoffenheim’s Sargis Adamyan in the summer.
In addition, Modeste, who switched to Dortmund, is certainly a loss, but you can also exist without him. “Now the 20-goal man is gone. But if I have four players who score eight goals, it’s 32. That’s more,” said Baumgart. The gameplay doesn’t change much either. “I didn’t just play the football that we play here, but also elsewhere. And Tony wasn’t there,” explained the coach: “It has nothing to do with one person.”
Despite Modeste’s departure, Sebastian Andersson only has limited chances. “With Seb we clearly decided to leave, that’s no secret,” said Baumgart. The Swede is training well at the moment, “and if he stays, he might become an option again. But at the moment I see the others ahead of him in terms of performance.”
