The most dangerous places in Brno: people fear accidents more than muggings
Cejl, Bratislavská, the main station and the adjacent Tesco department store. These are the places that the residents of Brno identified as the most dangerous in a survey of the perception of safety in the city. In addition, the study revealed that almost half of the interviewed residents of Brno witnessed a crime or attempted crime either personally or heard about the event from their loved ones.

Researchers from Masaryk University had the task of finding out how people perceive crime and safety in Brno. The research, in which seven hundred and sixty respondents took part, revealed that the people of Brno quite often have experience with criminal activity in the role of witnesses and victims. “A full third of the respondents said that they themselves or someone close to them had committed a crime in the last two years. A decrease in this experience with age is evident,” the researchers state in the study.
When asked whether life in Brno is safe, the majority of interviewees answered either positively or neutrally. Simona Ostřanská, a student from Brno, has a similar view of the matter. “I work in a bar and regularly go home only in the evening. I’m not afraid in the center, there are a lot of people and good lighting,” described the young woman. However, she added that she does not feel well in some locations in Brno. She mentioned, for example, Cejl or the area around Dornych.

She agreed with the other respondents in this as well, Cejl, together with Bratislavská and Francouzská streets, is often referred to as the least safe. According to research, residents of Brno do not feel comfortable even in the vicinity of the main station and the adjacent Tesco department store or in the vicinity of Úzká Street. In their answers, the interviewees did not forget the parks or the Stará osada stop. These are among the types of places where Brno police officers often intervene. “Recently, we have been paying particular attention to interchanges where a large number of people move. They are among our priorities,” said Pavel Šoba, spokesman for the Brno city police.
Safer under supervision
another topic that scientists have turned into research is camera systems. According to the responses from the questionnaires, seventy percent of their authors feel safer under the surveillance of cameras. However, most of the questions did not know how accurate the camera recordings are, or which specific places are being monitored. The police officers themselves praise the camera system. “It helps us a lot during inspections. Our surveillance center works 24/7, so officers receive up-to-date information on where and what is happening. Thanks to this, they can immediately take action, and the fact that they are very fast often does not help the perpetrators either,” Šoba described.
Based on the responses of those interviewed, the city intends to target preventive measures at specific locations. These include camera systems and lighting, but also work with at-risk groups. “It is another matter of comparing the feedback that brings the evaluation and importance of preventive work as well as the work of the police,” pointed out the spokeswoman for the city municipality, Radka Loukotová. According to her, Brno has this research processed roughly every three to four years. .

Although the questionnaire was focused on street crime and criminal activity, the open answers often mentioned traffic in Brno. “One of the typical attitudes can be summed up by noting that, rather than murder or violence, the respondent is more concerned about being hit by an inattentive driver,” the researchers state in the research report. The respondents mentioned traffic problems mainly in terms of the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. The repeated responses were that residents feel threatened reckless and aggressive drivers and they lack sufficient crossings and cycle paths.
According to the data published by the city of Brno on its website, crimes related to road safety have dominated the crimes in the city for the past six months. There are more than half of them, a total of sixty-one percent.
