Russia requested a briefing from the UN Security Council in connection with the shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant
Moscow invites the meeting to be held on August 11 with the participation of the IAEA Director General. Earlier it was reported that the UN at the last moment blocked the mission of the atomic energy agency.
Russia voices convene meeting of the UN Security Council because of the shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. The briefing is expected to take place on 11 August. According to media reports, Moscow requested participation of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi as a speaker. “Ukrainian provocations should not be hidden from the general public,” noted First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyansky.
On the eve of the Russian Foreign Ministry declaredAt the last moment, the transfer of the IAEA to the Zaporozhye NPP was disrupted. The route of the Atomic Energy Investigation Agency at the facility was agreed with Russia as early as August 3rd. The UN decision gives the green light to Kyiv to start shelling the nuclear power plant, He speaks department representative Maria Zakharova. IAEA mission as neutral required but unlikely to get there any time soon, says Director of the Center for European Information Nikolai Topornin:
– A number of doubts confirmed the proposal that the IAEA mission be contained in the database of the Zaporizhzhya NPP, so that they have constant systemic monitoring and they have high accuracy to inform the public and observe what is happening there. Because coronavirus infection says one thing, Ukrainian coronavirus infections say something else, where is the truth, where is the truth, it is very difficult. Therefore, perhaps, such a discussion would be important, but it seems to me that again, most likely, Russia and Ukraine will keep accounts between themselves. I have serious doubts about the constructiveness of such a conversation. In early February, there were no serious, practical decisions within the UN to resolve the situation. Even the only agreement on grain, designated as the “Istanbul Commission”, is probably more the merit of an intermediary in the person of Turkish President Erdogan than the UN, although Guterres arrived, but he was there in the form of a visa on the cake, nothing more.
– As for the IAEA mission there, will it reach it in the end? The Foreign Ministry says the UN security department thwarted the incident.
– It is very easy and simple in modern conditions to blame the other side for what exactly it is disrupting, or this security department also does not give permission. Why doesn’t she give permission? Because there is no security guarantee, no one can get it around the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which is why the IAEA mission is not put forward. When an agreement is reached, if such an agreement is at all possible between Russia and Ukraine, in order to somehow bring the Zaporizhzhya NPP out of the blows and create an unstressed operation, then the IAEA specialists can start working. At the moment, to be honest, the possibility of this mission in the near future seems doubtful to me.
At the White House departures return Ukraine control over the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. According to US presidential spokesman Karine Jean-Pierre, Washington highly appreciates Kyiv’s commitment to “maintaining nuclear security under difficult conditions.” According to the U.S. Department of Energy and the airport’s Nuclear Security Administration, radiation sensors at the Zaporozhye NPP continue to receive data and there are no signs of increased or abnormal levels of radiation.
