Return to the 17th century on the Rubensmarkt: “The market vendors wear beautiful historical costumes” | Antwerp
AntwerpOn Monday 15 August, visitors to the Grote Markt will return to the time of Baroque master Rubens. During the traditional Rubensmarkt they get a taste of 17th-century life. “ There is something for everyone on the market, especially for those who are still looking for an original gift for Mother’s Day.”
On the atmospheric Rubensmarkt, almost two hundred market vendors sell their products that are linked to Antwerp’s glorious period. They are dressed for the occasion in beautiful historical costumes. Visitors so literally and figuratively of 17th-century life, until the world-famous artist Peter Paul Rubens resided in the city.
“The brilliant spirit of Rubens always haunts Antwerp, but on August 15, the market vendors of the Flemish Baroque master of Antwerp will come back to life on the atmospheric Rubensmarkt,” says alderman for markets and commuters Peter Wouters. “In full costume and with a big smile they display their extensive collection in the beautifully decorated shop window. Something for everyone, especially for those who are still looking for an original gift for Mother’s Day.”
Colorful market of the city
“The summer of 2022 is well on its way to becoming a top season for tourism in Antwerp, especially when we see how many foreign visitors have found their way back,” says Koen Kennis, alderman for tourism. “Now that the Rubensmarkt can continue in all its splendor, we treat them to the most colorful market in the city, traditionally an event that the Sinjoren also look forward to.”
The market takes place in the heart of the city, from 8 am to 9 pm on the Grote Markt, Kaasrui, Suikerrui, Ernest Van Dijckkaai and Plantinkaai. Also on Sint-Jansvliet, visitors can visit an antique and flea market especially for the occasion. The city advises everyone to come to the Rubensmarkt by bicycle, shared mobility, public transport or via a park-and-ride.
