“Perhaps others will come to the light.” Is Russia ready for the opinion of an “anti-Western” alliance in the image of the USSR
State Duma deputy from Crimea Mikhail Sheremet (United Russia) in a conversation with RIA Novosti created a voluntary association of sovereign states in the image of the USSR in order to “oppose NATO and the expansion of the West.” Politicians polled by RTVI were divided as part of the consideration of the parliamentarian’s statement. At the same time, most of them noted that there is a demand in the world for the emergence of a powerful alliance that protects the interests of countries that are not members of NATO and the EU.
What does Sheremet offer?
The deputy said that the complete restriction kept the balance in “his desire to work and colonize the world.” According to the opinion, it is necessary to return to the collective system of voluntary association of sovereign states into one military-political and economic bloc.
The politician is confident that this alliance “effectively protects against Western expansion and aggression.” The “great and mighty” USSR could become the prototype of the new confederation, Sheremet added.
The parliamentarian also clarified that the unification of independent states would affect the countries, not only to preserve, but also strengthen their sovereign interests against the backdrop of a consensus from the United States. After the collapse of the USSR, Washington began to “actively interfere in the affairs of states in the post-Soviet space, organizing color revolutions and coup d’état,” Sheremet said. In his opinion, the United States carried out a “gradual occupation” of the former republics of the USSR in order to “get close” to the borders of Russia – Ukraine is an obvious application.
The size of the calculated alliance can bypass the size of the USSR, the deputy believes.
“It will be an equal union, where each of the countries respects the sovereignty and culture of each other, and not those colonies that the United States is accustomed to creating for personal assistance and satisfaction,” he explained his thought.

“Many countries have a desire to confront their economic, sovereign and pending interests. But this does not mean that today we have gathered, everyone has left and tomorrow we will turn into a single state. Even on the rise of the Union of the state with Belarus, it is clear that such processes are not going as fast as if they were delayed.
Therefore the idea [Шеремета] seems to be good, but at the moment, given its orientation towards the Soviet Union, it is still close to utopia. At the same time, one must understand that the idea of collective protection of interests is very relevant, it will find responses and be embodied in one form or another.
Take, for example, the CSTO, SCO or BRICS. After all, this is an association of countries for the collective protection of interests. We know that Iran is going [к БРИКС], and other countries are about to join. Of course, they will not follow their sovereign, but their actions are dictated by potential interest.
At present, these three associations are coping with the goals for which they were vulnerable. But evolutionarily, in the medium term, they can turn into something more, original.
Therefore, a reference to the USSR, in my opinion, is not entirely appropriate. This is a revolutionary path, and everything should be gradual, evolutionary.”

“I think that the format of confederations like the USSR is impossible for Russia, we see – only an empire. That is, an international state without any federal structure. I’m not saying that it is necessary to revive the border of the Russian Empire, we already scared half the world with our aspirations, travels, wars and so on.
That is, some kind of voluntary accession – please. Enticing, dragging other particles of the powder is not helpful. Russia is a force when it is a monolith, when there is federal power and criminal prosecution.
By and large, you need to take the best from the USSR and the tsarist empire, all this to create opposition and a normal, calm state. It will be well managed and respected in the world, because we have great strength, many talented people, and a powerful army.
Therefore, we ourselves must create a strong, powerful state, and then they themselves reached out to us. The same countries of the CIS, the former republics of the USSR themselves will come and ask us.
In other words, we have everything to save us in peace. But we must also leave them alone, explaining this in the Ukrainian sense, that “don’t bother us, don’t interfere with us.” History has shown 99 times that everyone who comes to us with a sword will die by the sword.”

“This idea is recommended with the position of the Communist Party. I am glad that United Russia representatives have matured to this proposal 30 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Before that, they boycotted all the possible kinds of ideas all the time. Although I think that he will be corrected so that he does not promote communicative ideas.
But in fact, on the 100th anniversary of the USSR, it is logical to voice such things, to activate the theme of the USSR 2.0, and so on. It’s good that one of the representatives of United Russia is talking about this.
There is no point in talking about the revival of, for example, the Warsaw Pact, because there is no geopolitical contour, since its operation began under Gorbachev, and the current party in power continues to do so. So far I do not see countries that would be ready to enter it.
As for the revival of the USSR, that is, Belarus, a conditional New Russia, which has now been created. God forbid, we will reach Transnistria. There is South Ossetia, Abkhazia.
There is a basis for reintegration, but let’s look further. Winter Is Coming. Therefore, maybe others will come to the light [государства]”.

“These are all rhetorical statements. On paper, this hat can be made both realizable and unrealizable. I have a cheerful distaste for this kind of idea. Even if this is introduced into patriotic education in schools, it still belongs to rhetoric.
It’s just kindergarten. There are many things you can write on paper. It’s just such a game “Who uses Zhirinovsky more in our time.” And everyone lines up, wanting to show who does it more fun.
I think that nobody [из стран] will not agree to any associations in new structures.
