fSoccer champion Salzburg loses his storm jewel Benjamin Sesko to RB Leipzig. Both clubs reported completion on Tuesday. The 19-year-old Slovenian will remain in Austria for the time being – he decided on his next career step almost a year before moving. Sesko signed a five-year contract with Leipzig from summer 2023. According to Sky, Salzburg should receive a transfer fee of 24 million euros from the German Bundesliga club, which is also supported by Red Bull.
Sesko’s contract with Salzburg runs until the summer of 2026. Changes between the sister clubs are not uncommon, but recently they were no longer the norm. Sesko is the 19th player to go straight from Salzburg to Leipzig. The last Dominik Szoboszlai had been transferred to Saxony at the turn of the year 2020/21.
Sports director Christoph Freund had recently emphasized several times that Sesko would finally contest the current season in Salzburg. “In the last few months there has been a lot of talk about a transfer and a lot of speculation about his future,” said Freund on Tuesday according to a club broadcast. “In order for us to plan accordingly, we expect to have some clarity about his future, which is also in the player’s interest and important to him.”
The 1.95m tall man has been put in attack by the Bulls following Karim Adeyemi’s departure to Borussia Dortmund. He also wanted to have “clarity” about his future as quickly as possible, emphasized Sesko. “In order to put an end to the speculation and to be able to concentrate fully on my tasks here at FC Red Bull Salzburg, it was important for me to decide on my next career step now.” So far, Sesko has made 39 appearances for Salzburg, scoring 12 goals.
