Amnesty Norway has lost 80 members since the controversial Ukraine report
Amnesty’s controversial Ukraine report has led to around 80 Norwegian members resigning from the organization in protest, according to Amnesty Norway.
In the controversial report, which was published last Thursday, Amnesty concluded that the Ukrainian military’s tactics put civilians at risk by setting up military bases in residential areas, writes Our country.
It did not go down well with the Ukrainian authorities, who accuse the organization of supporting Russian propaganda, or with several Amnesty members.
Since the report was published, 60 Norwegian members have signed up in protest against the organisation, while 40 members have signed up without giving a reason. Amnesty Norway estimates that 20 of these are also protest messages.
On Friday, the head of Amnesty Ukraine also resigned in protest. Nevertheless, Amnesty stands by the findings in the report.
– We have used the same methods as we otherwise do when we investigate violations of international law in the rest of the world. We are still responsible for the findings in the report, says communications manager Sindre Stranden Tollefsen to the newspaper.
