Young swan rescued from Irrsee with a fishing hook
timeline
At the state border with Salzburg, residents discovered a young swan with a fishing hook and a cord in its body over the weekend. They caught the animal and brought it to Lochen (Braunau/Upper Austria) for paw help. A vet was able to operate on the swan and remove the fishhook.
According to animal rights activists, the fishing hook and line are stuck deep in the swan’s flesh. A vet was able to successfully prevent the item and treat the wound. According to the finders, this is already the fourth swan around the Irrsee that has been injured by fishing hooks.
Finder reports fourth swan with insights
The swan family has often stayed on private property on the shore of the lake. According to eyewitnesses, two siblings and the swan father had already died from an opening caused by fish hooks. In June 2021, an Upper Austrian shot a swan by the lake with his rifle. “The Irrsee is obviously a dangerous place for animals,” says Pfotenhilfe boss Johanna Stadler, dismayed.
Paw Aid: “Leaving Fish Hooks Down Is Animal Cruelty”
“Fishing is in itself a very questionable hobby that deliberately accepts animal suffering and has the aim of killing animals. But then leaving torn fishing lines and the extremely sharp hooks with barbs that cause big wounds lying around is grossly negligent cruelty to animals,” criticized Stadler. The injured swan is on the mend after the operation.
