The general repair of the most worn-out bridge in Prague was an event watched with concern. 110 days was the time during which it was necessary to complete the first stage of the reconstruction of the Barrandovsky bridge. In addition, intensive construction of apartments continued in all the city streets.
Construction consumes a large amount of raw materials
The builder of construction works that will serve Praanm in five years consumes a large amount of building materials. Devo, steel, log, bricks or concrete. All these commodities must be transported from the place of production to the place of construction. And there was no material. A medium-sized apartment building with 100 apartments consumes 25 thousand tons of building materials. In the case of transport infrastructure construction, it is a multifaceted matter. And not only that. It is therefore necessary to know the amount of material taken from the buildings. Excavation of soil or demolition is being prepared in the opposite direction to landfills and recycling centers outside the capital. In a year, millions of tons of material are transported to and from the city.

Transport mainly by road
The most common means of transport for transporting construction materials are cargo trucks. Thousands of storage sheds have to pass through the city to deliver the required amount of raw materials to the construction site. One cargo truck can carry 25 tons of material. For example, for one million tons of material, this is 40,000 cars of these pressures. For the construction industry in Prague, which consumes several million tons of raw materials every year, tens of thousands of presses are driven into the city every year.
Use alternative modes of transportation in the world
In many European cities, alternative methods of transport are used much more for the transport of bulky goods. Especially in cities where rivers flow, cargo shipping is intensively used. The Danube in Vienna or the Seine in Pai are full of cargo ships carrying steel, wood or aggregate. The decision to build in a large area, close to the city center and industrial areas, where the cargo can be unloaded or even transported on behalf of city vehicles, together with a large shipping warehouse, creates an agglomeration capable of supplying raw materials that would otherwise have to be transported by road. Thanks to this, the number of cargo trucks is not only in the cities, but also on the long roads and around the villages, from where the material came.

One cargo truck can transport a thousand tons of material. That’s 40 krt, not one click. Although the boat sails more slowly, there is no car on the road, but the traffic, on the other hand, is smooth, and except for a few minutes spent in the locks, the vessel sails without a peep towards its destination. Ship transport is therefore not as operative as road transport, but it is time-plannable and efficient. It is therefore suitable to be used especially for the regular transport of bulky raw materials, such as building materials, soil, waste or container transport.
Boat transport in Prague
In Prague, the capacity of the Vltava for freight transport is only about 4% used. With the exception of one-time transportation of large-volume constructions or otherwise untransportable cargo, only two production facilities in the capital city are used for shipping on a regular basis, accounting for about 90% of all shipping shipments to the metropolitan area. They are the Rohansk ostrov concrete plant, which is located in a development area where hundreds of thousands of square meters of office apartments, offices and public infrastructure will be built within a few years, and the Libe concrete plant near Prask Troji, which is connected to the building by a unique underground collector, which the aggregate is transported by ship to the warehouse of the concrete plant without affecting the traffic of cars and pedestrians on the surface in any way. Both of these establishments transport 300,400 thousand tons of aggregate to the city for the production of concrete and city roads, so more than 10,000 truck trips take place every year.

The future of construction in Prague
Prague will continue to develop in the following years. In addition to new residential areas and offices, the main city is the construction of further stages of the metro, the regional inner and outer city ring, new bridges, the Vltava Philharmonic, large-capacity parking lot P+R and many other buildings will be built. All these buildings consume a large amount of material. This is how a new controllable technology comes to the fore. The screed should be concrete from recycled aggregate. Brick recycled from the demolition of an old building proves to be a good raw material for making concrete. Thanks to its use, not only the amount of hauled goods is reduced, but also the amount of freight transport required for its transportation. Without high-quality commercial aggregate, the production of concrete cannot be done for many years, but the combination of ecological shipping, the sale of raw materials and the use of recycled cement is an ideal combination for the production of ecological ether concrete.
Recycled brick and clay is a suitable raw material for making concrete
The Rohansk ostrov and Libe concrete plants are thus long-term proof of the fact that even the indispensable construction industry with new technology, suitably connected with an alternative mode of transport, can function ecologically and respect the environment and life.
Special concrete for the Barrandovsk bridge
Over the course of the summer months, the reconstruction of the Barrandovský bridge underwent technical and temporal reconstruction. In the course of the reconstruction, it turned out that the underlying layers are so damaged that they cannot be repaired in any way. Therefore, the latest technology in the field of UHPC concrete was used. This method of rehabilitation of bridge structures is used mainly in the USA. It is an extraordinarily strong and extremely durable concrete, its lifespan is estimated at no more than 200 years. In the past, builders used this product in the construction of technically complicated roads for cyclists in Elkovy and Luca nad Vltavou. The use of bags during the reconstruction of the Barrand bridge was unique under the conditions of the Czech Republic. The raw materials for this special concrete were transported to the Libe and Rohansk island concrete plants by means of cargo ships.
