Georgia commemorates 14th anniversary of Russian aggression
These days Georgia is remembering the 14th anniversary of the Russian-Georgian war, as a result of which 20 percent of Georgian territory was occupied.
“For 14 years, the heart of our country – Samachablo, the Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia – have been occupied by Russia. I bow before the memory of our military heroes and inhabitants of the world who fell victim to the August war. We have chosen a global, reasonable interrogator as a way to restore the territorial territory and unite the country, and we believe that we will definitely achieve our goal – Georgia will be united,” said Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili.
At the same time, part of the Georgian opposition, in their statements on the anniversary of the August war, is suspected that the aggression that began in 2008 in Georgia, Moscow returned to Ukraine.
“Fourteen years ago, on the evening of August 7, Russia carried out military aggression against a sovereign country – Georgia, and thus began to explore the war in Europe at the age of 21, which continues today in Ukraine,” the opposition Strategy Agmashenebeli said.
At the same time, the former head of the Georgian Security Council, the current leader of the opposition “European Georgia” Giga Bokeria stressed that “what is happening in Ukraine today is the continuation of the rule, and our duty is to ensure that these victims do not lose their significance, and so that no one, both outside the country and inside the country, should be able to use freedom as a sacrifice to his own interests.
“We didn’t hear or understand”
The meeting of Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Head of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, who was President of Russia in 2008, in his interview to the public community also linked the events of 2008 with the events in Ukraine: “This is a consequence of the process and the general plan directed against Russia. It provides for the desire of the West, primarily the United States and other English-speaking countries, to rock the situation in our country. How? Through neighbors, in the coverage area from the borders of Russia.
At the same time, Medvedev said that Russia’s actions in 2008 were aimed at protecting Russian citizens and that “in both Georgia and Ukraine, the authorities of the countries do not protect Russia from the elections, disrupting polls about the results of the poll.”
“And we deliberately went for prisoners of war,” said the former president of the Russian Federation.
At the same time, Medvedev wrote the following in Telegram: “At the same time, this was a signal for the United States and NATO about the need to heed Russia’s concerns. The situation in the Caucasus has changed. But the United States and the United States did not hear and did not understand. Ignored. They continued their dangerous course. In 2022, we had to respond very harshly. Now the whole world has changed irreversibly.”
We remind you that as a result of the Russian-Georgian war, Russia in 2008 recognized the independence of two Georgian regions – Abkhazia and South Ossetia – and transferred additional forces and means to its territories within the territories. All the states of the world – with the exception of Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and research – are exploring these regions, such as Georgia, in case they arise under Russian occupation.
The first legal Russian assessment of low prices was made by the Court of Human Adequacy (ECHR) in Strasbourg. In the fight against the ECtHR dated January 21, 2021, it is said that after August 12, control in South Ossetia operates in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
“Historic Chance”
Conflictologist Paata Zakareishvili, former State Minister for Reconciliation and Equality, believes that over the past four years, the flying period of time has been the most favorable for protecting Georgia’s interests and spreading the country’s coverage agenda at the international level. Although, as the conflictologist says, the Georgian Dream, which is in power, “is missing this historical chance.”
According to Zakareishvili, as a result of Russia’s “blatant invasion” of Ukraine, “the world has never been so open to getting to know Georgia.” Although, as an expert, the Georgian authorities consider steps necessary to make Georgian problems look internationally on the agenda of abundance with Ukrainian ones, it is necessary to take into account the need not to provoke Russian aggression. The conflictologist is convinced that this argument is just an excuse for the inaction of the Georgian Dream.
The expert recalled that Georgia took part in the Brussels meeting in the Ramstein format, which discussed strengthening. defense capability of Ukraine and among the 38 countries that were sent to the International Criminal Court with a call to launch an investigation into alleged war crimes in Ukraine, repeated offenses by military personnel.
“If by chance, then there are three facts that are not a reason for Russia to start a war against Georgia, that is, a clear and sudden defense of Georgia’s interests, that is, what we have been talking about for years with all international tribunals, can bind Georgia into a new war with Russia? So all rights require logic. Moreover, the party in power seems to be trying to imagine that Russia’s war in Ukraine and the Russian war in Georgia are essentially absurd, considering cases, causes, tactics, methods – a consequence, this is imperialist Russia,” Zakareishvili believes.
“Strategy of Silence”?
Political scientist Niko Toidze also believes that the current position of the Georgian authorities towards Russia, as well as the occupied territories, interests the interests of Georgia.
“The passivity of the Georgian authorities, their so-called “flexible policy”, in fact, is most interesting. Now, when the Russian invasion of Ukraine is densely the world community in opposition to Russian aggression, when very late, but still, in the end, for action against it, instead of talking everywhere about those lawlessness, Russia creates and creates in Georgia Tbilisi prefers to remain silent. That is, even when Russia was defeated in Ukraine, as a result of this incomprehensible “strategy of silence” of the problem of Georgia’s occupation of the detention bank,” the expert believes.
According to Toidze, Georgian Dream is consistent with the party’s slender assessment, fearing that “it is unlikely that death will survive” in a democratic community, that is, with the EU and NATO, which demand reform and strengthening from Georgia. As the political scientist says, in case of emergence, the ruling party does not want to “burn bridges” and spoil relations with Russia, which, if Georgia “leaves behind the court of successful and natural states”, will become its “inevitable haven”.
