Florence airport: a thousand suitcases blocked
At the “Amerigo Vespucci” airport of Florence-Peretola it was a weekend to forget. The chaos that is characterizing so many European airports in the summer months has also materialized in the Tuscan capital: thousands of suitcases, strollers, prams, backpacks, sacks and bags stacked in the warehouses, are waiting to be returned to their legitimate owners. Discomforts, albeit more limited, at the “Galileo Galilei” airport in Pisa.
“Undelivered baggage often ruins holidays, although in the Italian case of recent months it is more about passengers not returning home without first reporting the loss of cases at the airport, in defeating cases, if they remain without luggage for over 20 days, you can have compensation up to 1000 Euros “, explained the president of the National Consumers Union (Unc), Massimiliano Dona.
The airport manager Toscana Aeroporti apologized through a statement from the CEO Roberto Naldi: “The speed of the recovery took everyone by surprise. This cannot include a justification for any inefficiencies our passengers are experiencing in recent weeks. And on this we can only apologize.”
One wonders how this situation could have been reached at the Florence airport. In reality, unchecked baggage has been piling up in the holds of airplanes since June due to strong winds. With the strong heat, then, the aircraft are forced to decrease the load and passengers in order to take off on a short runway. The surge in tickets sold in the summer, layoffs in the previous months, the few hires and seasonal claims did the rest.
