Dachstein is a popular mountain on Instagram

Sugar Mizzy August 8, 2022

lifestyle

The 2,995 meter high Dachstein between Salzburg, Upper Austria and Styria is the most popular alpine photo motif in Austria. This is shown by an analysis by the Austria Press Agency (APA) of photos posted on the social network Instagram. A total of four mountains, some of which are located on Salzburg soil, make it into the top 5.

Not the Großglockner between Salzburg, Carinthia and Tyrol, but the imposing Dachstein massif is the most popular alpine photo motif in Austria on Instagram. By July 27, 2022, around 217,000 postings in the social network were dedicated to the 2,995 meter high Dachstein, according to an analysis by APA.

Dachstein trumps Großglockner and Arlberg the show

The Arlberg and the 3,798 meter high Großglockner made it into second and third place in the ranking. The Arlberg in Vorarlberg generated 150,000 postings, and the Glockner counted 140,000 photos. In the same analysis in 2019, the Dachstein was also ahead.

Here you can see that Mitterspitz and Torstein are lower than the main summit (far left). From the Salzburg side, the Torstein appears much higher than the Hoher Dachstein itself

Three-country summit on the south-western edge of the massif

As three years ago, more than 2,000 Austrian mountains and their hashtag presence on Instagram were evaluated for the statistics. The Dachstein, located between Salzburg, Upper Austria and Styria, offers fascinating views with a simple ascent by gondola.

In addition to photos of an ice cave, impressive mountain formations, lake landscapes as well as climbing and hiking impressions, images of a viewing platform that look like a stairway to nothingness stand out on Instagram.

Kitzsteinhorn in fourth place, Hochkönig in fifth place

Behind the Großglockner, the Kitzsteinhorn is in fourth place, another Salzburg mountain and another 3,000m peak among the top 10 mountains in Austria. The Großglockner is not only the highest mountain in the country, but also has the highest paved panoramic road in Austria with the Großglockner High Alpine Road and thus offers popular motifs, especially for motorized photographers. The Hochkönig (Pongau) made it to fifth place.
