More than half of the electricity consumed in Portugal comes from natural gas, indicates graphic shared on Facebook
“What is the reason for giving light to the Portuguese?” publish of July 27 on Facebook, sent to the Polygraph with a request for fact checking.
In question is a graph, with references to the first quarter of 2022, in which it is highlighted that 8.86% of electricity comes from natural gasfollowed by hydropower (11.59%) and renewable cogeneration (8.02%), among several others with lower percentages.
It is important to start with, on the contrary what is said in this publication, the fact is that Portugal you won’t have to “to accept the 15% cut in the consumption of natural gas”. This was the initial proposal of the European Commission, but the agreement reached on 26 July reduce the savings target from 45 to 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas and taking into account the specificities of the Member States, from the outset by establishing some exemptions and the possibility of requesting derogations.
One of the reasons given by the Minister of Environment and Climate Action of Portugal, Duarte Cordeiro, will move towards the initial agreement, consisted of the weak gas interconnections with other Member States. However, in the reformulation of the agreement, the European Commission that “the Member States that are not interconnected with the gas networks of other Member States are exempt States that must be guaranteed, since gas cannot release gas pipeline volumes in other members.
If it invokes the derogations from the forecast, Portugal will not have to reduce more than 7% of natural gas consumption, in the period between August 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023.
As for the graph, it will have been replicated from the EDP – Energias de Portugal page. In the first quarter of 2022, EDP indicates that 58.86% of energy consumption by “business and small business” originated in natural gas.
In the total of EDP Comercial that companieshowever, the percentage of low natural gas minimizes to 54.55%. In the second quarter, there were 57.96% and 52.37% of natural gas referred to in the categories: “residential and small businesses” and “total EDP Comercial”.
but this is just one of the energy supply companies, despite the dominant position in the domestic market. N/A data base from REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais We have global numbers.
According to the latest data from REN, in July 2022, natural gas was the source of 36.1% of the supply of electricity consumption in Portugal, which corresponds to a increase of 4 percentage points compared to July 2021.
Insofar as 28.5% of the electricity consumption supply in July 2022 is attributed to “balance importer“, mainly from Spain, assuming that some of that imported electricity is natural, appears to be safe in gas, assuming that more than half of the electricity consumed in Portugal comes from natural gas.
Not only at EDP, but at the national level, although with the exception that the “import balance” has no data as to the source of electricity.
