Bundesliga: Strong Cologne defeat Schalke
Status: 07.08.2022 21:58
In the Bundesliga, 1. FC Köln has dealt with FC Schalke 04 after an early red card. On the first day of the new season, Cologne won 3-1 (0-0).
The Cologne opening goal on Saturday (07.08.2022) was scored by Luca Kilian (49th). A total of three VAR appearances also lead to decisions for Cologne: a disallowed goal by Schalke Rodrigo Zalazar (10th), a red card against Dominick Drexler (35th) and a subsequent goal by Florian Kainz (64th). Marius Bülter scored the goal for Schalke (76′), but Dejan Ljubicic put the lid on (80′).
Schröder sees Schalke “disadvantaged” by VAR
“We have become disadvantaged,” Schalke sports director Rouven Schröder complained to DAZN, especially with regard to the dismissal. He was annoyed that the video assistant “corrected decisions that were not clearly wrong”.
Coach Frank Kramer summed it up on the sports show microphone: “We played well and actually took the lead. The red card is a “highly controversial decision” that he cannot understand.
Cologne coach Steffen Baumgart also said: “Sometimes we should also trust the boys that they know when someone is doing something badly or unconsciously. ‘Drax’ is anything but an unfair player. And you can see that it is in step. So the red card is annoying for everyone.”
Zalazar direct acceptance hits but doesn’t count
Promoted Schalke had made something. The full-backs Thomas Ouwejan and Cédric Brunner were high, Schalke didn’t retreat after losing the ball and put Cologne under pressure early on. The FC had problems.
And then S04 cheered. A free-kick jumped at Zalazar’s feet, his direct acceptance was deflected and smashed into the angle. However, referee Robert Schröder checked the scene on screen and ruled offside because Schalke captain Maya Yoshida was in Martin Schwäbe’s field of vision.
Dietz’ big chance – Drexler sees red
And then FC took over and quickly gained 70 percent of possession. Julian Chabot is only one centimeter behind after a corner kick (18′), Dietz’s head failed on the strong reacting goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow (25′). Something went for Cologne on the outside.
Suddenly Drexler had to leave the field. In midfield stabbing for the ball against Jonas Hector, he caught the FC captain on the calf. The two then clapped amicably and continued playing. However, referee Schröder fielded Drexler’s open sole when viewing the pictures after the VAR note. He makes a tough decision: red for Drexler, who left the field in disbelief.
Cologne dominates, the VAR radios again
And things got even worse for Schalke: Just a few minutes after the restart, the home fans were celebrating the lead. A short corner was not defended by S04, Hector’s cross pass pushed Kilian over the line.
After a mistake by Schwolow, who lost the ball, Kainz expects the second Cologne goal. This was only given after another VAR intervention, originally the referee team had ruled offside.
Bülter’s header after a free-kick from Thomas Ouwejan caught FC goalkeeper Schwäbe wrong-footed again, but shortly afterwards Cologne’s Ljubicic got the final result – also with a header. Schalke’s Brunner failed at the post (90 + 2).
Cologne confirms Modeste change before Schalke game – and Baumgart bursts the collar
Even before kick-off there was news that directly affected the game. 1. FC Köln confirmed that there are strikers Anthony Modeste on Borussia Dortmund pulls, uh, that Sébastien Haller had testicular cancer to replace. The medical check is scheduled for Monday. Debutant Florian Dietz was in the starting XI for Modeste.
The announcement of the change shortly before the Schalke game made Coach Baumgart burst his collar. “It pisses me off,” said Baumgart after the game, “it won’t come out on Friday and Saturday, and then we play, we have an important game – and then it comes out.” It has “to do with fair play that you keep it under cover and don’t talk big about it,” said Baumgart, for whom there was no alternative to removing Modeste from the squad for the Schalke game at short notice. “Tony wanted to play. I didn’t think it was appropriate. When you don’t follow the path, you have to make decisions.” The coach did not know who made the change public.
For Baumgart it was already clear in the run-up to the game that he would not put any obstacles in Modeste’s way. The striker had already received a lucrative offer from another club last winter, at which time it was agreed that talks would be held in the summer should a similar situation arise again.
FC must go to Leipzig, Schalke received Gladbach
