Debrecen – People drop like flies in the killer flight. The jokes are flying and we’re just scratching our heads. Who is the real enemy? Criticism.
Brad Pitt has been a household name since the beginning of the 90s: if the actor adds his face and acting to a film, he is guaranteed to turn the heads of the audience. Although his latest film The Lost City was not a particularly big release, Once Upon a Time… Hollywood and Ad Astra were also divisive, before that he appeared in many great works: Allies, 12 Years a Slave, Troy, Bluff, Warriors Club… and we could list.
The killing spree
His latest big hit The killer flight: David Leitch, who also wrote John Wick and Deadpool 2, has put together another crazy, bloody and twisted action film.
The story takes place in Japan in just one night, precisely during a train journey: Katica (Brad Pitt), who was entrusted by her boss to get a briefcase containing 10 million dollars, boards the modern miracle. The son of the cruel gangster White Death and the bag are guarded by two assassins, Lemon (Brian Tyree Henry) and Mandarin (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). A mysterious young girl (Joey King) and a vengeful guy named Farkas (Bad Bunny) also appear. The line is far from over here. I wonder how the strange company arrives in Kyoto?
The film seems to be an exciting, but often concentrated slog. The influence of Tarantino’s oeuvre is strongly felt in him: it can be discovered in the strange dialogues, in the particularly bloody and violent scenes, in the proliferation of cruelty. This film also reminds us of Agatha Christie’s classic, Murder on the Orient Express, in which the Japanese love of cuteness and Latin American piquant virtu are included.
Eccentric characters from all over the world arrive on this flight, which is more dangerous than anyone could imagine.
This is an interesting interpretation of a slapstick story: the creators connect the elements of the story in such a way that the new information is revealed in such an order that the viewer enjoys all kinds of small stories throughout. Humor also plays an important role: the jokes with a unique taste are accompanied by a good amount of tiredness, the latter of which makes the viewer a little hooked, but the amount of snarky countermeasures is still tolerable.
The visuals are one of the great strengths of the film: the action scenes are creative, energetic and uninhibited, and all of this is accompanied by great music. Several western songs are performed in Japanese versions, which only makes them more cheerful, thus contrasting with the story even more.
The killer flight is a work of light summer entertainment, only for adults: it was rated 18 for a reason, it really goes quite gore, brutal and sometimes even somewhat disgusting. But despite this, its two-hour playing time hardly sits down, and although the actors have little space, every point of the train plays an important role. The whole world was opened up to the filmmakers for retrospectives: the filmmakers’ imaginations wandered to different regions of Japan, Johannesburg, Bolivia and Mexico.
