First PV system on a steep church roof
Business
The first photovoltaic system is currently being installed on the roof of a Salzburg church on the Elisabeth Church in the city of Salzburg. The parish made the area available so that it could also use the solar power itself. Specialists are needed for installation on the particularly small roof.
180 square meters of photovoltaic surface will be installed on the roof of the Elisabeth Church in the next two weeks. The facility was built with citizen participation, and residents were able to purchase share certificates. The PV system is operated by a cooperative that already operates five photovoltaic systems in Salzburg and Upper Austria. “We are pursuing a motivation that is suitable for our grandchildren – that means we want to generate energy and not burden subsequent generations with the generation, as is the case with nuclear power, for example,” says Heidemarie Rest-Hinterseer, head of the Agency for Renewable Energy. It should also be possible to distribute the share certificates to the next generations.
Parish church council has high expectations of a PV system
This will be the first photovoltaic system on a church roof in the state capital. Expectations are high: “In winter we expect big savings in heating costs because we have panel heaters in the church that run on electricity. In the long term we don’t want to need oil heating anymore, our goal is to be able to control everything via the PV system,” says Robert Leichs, chairman of the parish church council.
System consists of 100 modules
The system consists of more than 100 modules. On Monday, workers began to fix the anchorage to the roof. Specialists are needed for the installation on the particularly steep church roof: “You have to have a head for heights and you must not be afraid, because you are working at a height of around 30 meters. The anchors must now be installed professionally. The wind and the heat emitted by the roof make it even more strenuous,” says electrician Markus Vorauer.
PV system supplies church, households and kindergarten
The PV system on the roof of the Elisabeth Church should supply electricity for the next 30 years. In addition to the church, a total of eleven households in the vicarage, the kindergarten and the Bible world are supplied with energy.
