the Ge-Dix consortium is born, it will make Genoa a global traffic hub
The City Council approved the resolution for the creation and adhesion of the Municipality of Genoa to the Ge-Dix consortium (Genova Data Internet Exchange), together with the approval of the relevant deed of incorporation and the statute scheme. The consortium, open to public bodies and private entities, aims to make Genoa a privileged data exchange center for Internet service providers through the creation of an Internet Exchange Point (Ixp), or a physical access point to the network. through which the main network providers connect their networks and exchange traffic.
The primary purpose of an exchange point is to facilitate network interconnection through an exchange access point rather than third party networks. Internet exchange points were created to minimize the part of an Internet Service Provider (ISP) network traffic, which had to go through an upstream provider. The ISP, already in the availability phase, provides InternetIsp service providers with a common to exchange their Internet traffic.
The advantages of internet exchange points include:
- enable high-speed data transfer
- reduced latency
- provide fault tolerance
- improvement of the efficiency of the route
- · Bandwidth improvement.
How an Internet Exchange Point technically works
The physical infrastructure includes one or more high-speed network Ethernet switches. The exchange of traffic in an Ixp is enabled by the Border Gateway Protocol (Bgp). The traffic exchange is managed through a reciprocal peering agreement compliant with all ISPs. The latter normally specify routes through the peering relationship and can choose to route traffic through their own addresses or the addresses of other providers in the network.
In some scenarios, Ixp acts as a backup link to allow traffic to pass if the direct link fails. The operating costs of an Ixp are often shared among all the participating ISPs. For sophisticated exchange points, ISPs are charged a monthly or annual fee based on the type of port and the volume of traffic.
The Ge-Dix consortium has a ten-year duration and represents a strategic hub for the transformation of the Genoese territory, favoring its social, economic and cultural development. It is also configured as a decisive tool for improving the use and provision of services for businesses and the Public Administration.
“The birth of the Genova Data Internet Exchange is a fundamental step – declares Councilor Brusoni – for transforming our city into one of the most important digital ports at an international level. The Internet Exchange Point is a new network infrastructure that not only will reduce congestion, improving routing efficiency, but will attract numerous telecommunications operators, clouds and digital content distribution platforms to our city to make Genoa the main gateway for data in Europe “.
