The Spořilovská roof is a “hot potato” that the municipality and Prague 4 are tossing around

For twelve years, the residents of Spořilov have been complaining about excessive noise and high levels of dust, which was mainly caused by the transfer of truck traffic “under the windows” of local residents. One of the solutions is the long-promised roofing of Spořilovská Street. But it’s getting pushed back, again.
The fourth district claims that the municipality is inexplicably holding back construction. He, in turn, objects by saying that he cannot do anything until the Prague Circuit is completed.
Spořilovská street, especially in the direction from the D1 highway to the Jižní spojka, rather unhappily replaces the unfinished circuit in the Mirošovice – Běchovice section, or the section between the D1 and D11 highways.
The problem with this thoroughfare is that it actually intersects the Spořilov housing estate and the so-called Starý Spořilov, which became a “green island” not only because of Spořilov, but also surrounded by the South Junction and the North-South highway.

The current situation is unsustainable for the locals. Intensive truck traffic does not stop in Spořilov even at night, and the locals therefore do not get a break from the noise.
“It’s getting worse. The problem arises mainly in the summer, when you can’t have the windows open overnight, because you can’t sleep in the noise,” said one of the residents of Spořilov.
The tug-of-war continues and will likely continue
The project to cover the Spořilovská radial is nothing new. There has been talk of turning this thoroughfare into a tunnel for many years, and in addition, the project has had a valid environmental impact assessment, the so-called EIA, since 2019.
“Covering Spořilovská and directing traffic into the tunnel represents the most effective way of eliminating negative impacts from traffic on this road. In addition to reducing noise, Spořil’s new urban area with a park arrangement also ensures the possibility of urban connection between the two parts that are now separated.” stated for the Blesk newspaper Deputy Mayor of Prague 4 Zdeněk Kovářík (ODS).
In this context, the credentials of the representatives of the capital city counter that it is currently not possible to cover Spořilovská Street.
According to Deputy for Transport Adam Scheinherr (Prague itself), there can be no talk of roofing until the missing section of the Prague Ring Road between Mirošovice and Běchovice is put into operation.
According to him, it is not even possible to divert two-way truck traffic on 5. května street, because the capacity of the road would not be able to handle it and a collapse would occur.
As a form of satisfaction, the municipality wanted to at least “modify” Spořilovská Street. The proposal included, for example, the planting of trees or the expansion of sidewalks. But not a single proposal has an effect on the reduction of noise from transit traffic
But the fourth city district did not accept this municipal proposal. “Removing the turning lanes would mean limiting the throughput and flow of public transport and car traffic in the area of two important intersections. We cannot support the widening of sidewalks at the expense of turning lanes essential for the flow of public transport. we consider it completely unreasonable to plant trees in the area of the future construction of the roof, thereby making the construction impossible.” he added in an interview for the daily Blesk Blacksmith.
