Offenses in Luxembourg: what do cross-border workers really think?
The law is the same for residents and cross-border workers except for a few details. If it is obvious that cross-border workers cannot drive with impunity in the Grand Duchy, let us remember that they too are considering fines. Make the point.
Every day, many cross-border workers take the routes to get to work in Luxembourg. And it is better for them to avoid infringements by making sure to wear their seatbelts and to respect the speed limits because their car registered outside Luxembourg does not spare them penalties.
France, the first country concerned
In accordance with the European directive, France has signed a cross-border information exchange agreement with the LuxemburgJanuary 13, 2016. Until then, this only concerned the inhabitants of Moselle and Meurthe-et-Moselle.
From now on, it applies to the whole of French territory. A change brought about by the exponential number of infringements recorded by the speed cameras French which concerned vehicles registered in Luxembourg in 2015. This modification, entitled “ Cross-border », allows Member States to to change between them contact details of offenders on the road for the following eight offences:
- Speeding ;
- Failure to wear seat belts;
- Crossing a red light;
- Drunk driving;
- Driving under the influence of narcotics;
- Failure to wear a helmet;
- Driving on a prohibited lane;
- Unlawful use of a telephone or any other communication device.
Thus, the Luxembourgish drivers flashed by speed cameras english henceforth received a notice of breach ; the same applies to French drivers committing speeding or franchises of red lights in the Grand Duchy have specified the French authorities.
However, all neighboring countries are concerned: the Francethe Belgium and theGermany. These neighboring countries have signed an agreement with Luxembourg for the cross-border exchange of information on traffic offences.

Indeed, you can also lose points on your license in Luxembourg. At least on your virtual license and not your country’s hardware.
A risk of banning circulars in Luxembourg
In its communications, the government of the Grand Duchy recalls that drivers who do not have a Luxembourg driving license are assigned as soon as they enter the territory a virtual license with a capital letter of twelve points. In the event of an infringement of the rules of the Highway Code, the virtual license will be reduced by the number of points attached to the offense committed. If you lose your twelve virtual points, Luxembourg specifies that it cannot materially withdraw the permit. However, the total loss points include no driving a vehicle or moped in the territory of the Grand Ducal for the duration of the suspension.
Moreover, if the driver decides not to pay his due, he does not fear in theory no prosecution. Clearly, if the motorist does not intend to take the Luxembourg roads again one day, he does not risk much.
However, if he is directly arrested by the local police of the Grand Duchy, driving his vehicle in this same country, there he will risk much more! Thereby, officers could demand instant payment from him for his previous offensesincreased moreover, making the total very high if the list of unpaid bills is provided.
In other words, if you are a cross-border worker and are in “default of payment” in Luxembourg, for example, it is better not to get caught.

How do speed cameras work?
The fixed speed cameras measure speed in both directions of traffic. The vehicle is photographed from the front but also from the rear. The radar can also measure and photograph three lanes at the same time. They also know how to the distinction of vehicles, motorcycles and trucks.
Once the excess speed has been detected, the radar flashes the vehicle so that the numberplate and the driver be visible.
What is the procedure after the radar flash?
