At the same time as Sparta, Slavia Prague also entered the second preliminary round of the European Conference League, which awaited a trip to the very south of Europe. For the first time ever, she played in Gibraltar, where she faced the St. Joseph’s. There was no doubt about the favorite of the match; Prague’s Slavia had a much better squad compared to their opponent, and therefore it was expected that they would win without any problems.
That finally started to show right in the first half. In the 21st minute, Yira Sor opened the scoring after Traoré’s pass. The same player scored a second time 11 minutes later when Usor “greased” him. In the 34th minute, the home team also received a red card, so they had to play in the top ten. This was taken advantage of by the Slavic reinforcement of Ewerton, who found the score in the set-up. Not a Gibraltarian anymore, his emotions were also sent to the stands after the red coach.
The second half was in the same vein. Already in the 56th minute, substitute Ondřej Lingr found the score for 0:4, and the Praguers could finish the match in absolute comfort. The score did not change until the end of the match, and Slavia went on to win 0:4.
The last season was not a success. She couldn’t even, because Slavia Praha was only used to breaking records in recent seasons. However, Plzeň took away the league title, Slovácko won the cup, and so Slavia was left with only the European Conference League, which it also played last year. However, it can only be a challenge for Jindřich Trpišovský’s team; accustomed to tougher opponents, Slavia is thinking of nothing else but the knockout phase of the competition after the basic group. Best for the final, which will take place in Eden.
He has the talent for it. Slavia, like every year, has significantly strengthened and its team has become even more international. In addition to regulars such as Aleš Mandous, Tomáš Holeš and now Aiham Ousou, newcomers Eduardo Santos, Christ Tiéhi and Moses Usor, who netted a goal in the last preparatory match against Hungarian Puskás Akademie, also made it to the starting line-up. Even with supports like Lukáš Provod or Peter Olayinka on the bench, a win was expected.
why? The second preliminary round of the European Conference League was truly exotic for Slavia. For the first time ever, she faced off against Gibraltar’s oldest team, St. Joseph’s, or rather with the Gibraltar team in general, on whose soil she came for a clear win. So it was an opportunity to make up for the not-quite-successful last season, to introduce newcomers to a competitive match, and at the same time to increase self-confidence before more demanding matches.
Dominance and emotions
Slavia Praha showed from the beginning who is the boss on the pitch. She clearly held the ball, created chances and sent shots on goal. However, the home team managed to keep pace for the first quarter of an hour. However, the first goal came after 20 minutes. In the 21st minute, he received a great pass from Ibrahim Traoré to the speedster Yira Sor, who sent Slavia into the lead. And as expected, the same player struck a second time 11 minutes later. It was perfectly found by Usor, so he had no problem leveling without proximity.
After half an hour of play, another blow came for the exhausted home team, when in the 34th minute Pecci Macias stepped too hard against a stitched-up Ewerton and received a red card. From then on, the game became more hectic and the cards kept falling. Slavia still managed to stay on the scoring wave, Traoré sent a goal bid again and just found Eweron in the set time to make it 0:3. This was already too much for the Spanish home coach Paz, who also received a red card from the referee.
Beauty ride
Practically nothing changed in the second half. Slavia clearly had more of the game, they were on the ball and got in a shot that had to be eliminated by goalkeeper Fitzsimons. But that didn’t last long. His gloves did not reach the shot of Ondřej Lingro, who handled the rebound in the 56th minute and finished without anyone watching.
In the 72nd minute, Douděra’s goal came, as did Lingra two minutes later and then Jurečky, but neither of them increased the score. Slavia thus took the first step towards progressing to the third preliminary round of the elimination phase with a result of 0:4. The winner of the double match, which Slavia will most likely be, will face Greek Panathinaikos in the next preliminary round.
