Every drug user who dies is one too many. In order to uphold the memory of the dead and to emphasize the demands for change, organizations, associations and those affected met on July 21, 2022 taken of International Day of Remembrance for Deceased Drug Users at Marienplatz.

No death of a drug user would have to be. With the right resources, many of the people could have been helped, say the organizers. The topic is still urgent consumption rooms. Despite the repeated refusal of the Free State of Bavaria, the alliance is leaving no stone unturned to push for the urgently needed implementation. Also the blatant lack of substitution treatments – especially in rural areas – was addressed in no uncertain terms. It should be the aim of the organisers, that is, to reintegrate people who use addictive substances into society through appropriate measures, and not to give them further information. The day of remembrance is 25 years old. During this time, more than 34,000 drug users nationwide have died.
It’s a sad anniversary – but also one that makes it clear how important it is to have a strong alliance that does its part to change the help system, medical treatment and to destigmatize drug use and drug users.
Mayor Verena Dietl spoke on the occasion of the international day of remembrance for deceased drug users.
In addition to speeches by the participating sponsors, the first names of those in Munich last year were published deceased drug users as well as a common minute of silence. The Donnelly Connection played music.
