65 years of ALPEN-MAYKESTAG – a success story
From trading company to international innovation leader
ALPEN-MAYKESTAG, Austria’s leading manufacturer of high-quality drilling and milling tools with headquarters in Puch near Salzburg, production facilities in St. Gallen (Styria) and Ferlach (Carinthia), invited to the summer party on July 15th at the company headquarters in Puch/Salzburg . In the presence of Governor Wilfried Haslauer, members of the ALPEN-MAYKESTAG founding family Reischl and over 200 employees, the new logistics center was opened and the 65th company anniversary was celebrated.
“From a small trading company to an internationally active innovation leader in the field of drilling and milling tools, ALPEN-MAYKESTAG has had an unparalleled success story over the past 65 years to today’s important economic engine in Tennengau and beyond. In line with the anniversary, the company is committed to the business location of Salzburg with the new logistics center in Puch and thus secures numerous jobs in the region,” says Governor Wilfried Haslauer.
“The new ALPEN-MAYKESTAG logistics center occupied us intensively at all levels for a whole 36 months, from the initial idea to the start of trial operation. A big thank you to everyone who made this project a success,” said Ing. Mag. (FH) Claudia Zoff, Managing Director of ALPEN-MAYKESTAG GmbH in her welcome speech. “The aim was and is to increase customer satisfaction through better delivery performance and thus ensure the future development and growth of ALPEN-MAYKESTAG. By this we mean shortening the delivery times for our customers from the moment the order is received and noticeably reducing the error rates.”
In order to be able to start the 4 million euro project (including construction measures) at all, production in Puch had to be outsourced to the two locations in Ferlach and St. Gallen. Where production used to be, the hall was adapted and the new ALPEN-MAYKESTAG logistics center was built. “The procedures and processes were analyzed in numerous workshops and a good deal of company history was transferred to state-of-the-art logistics. Master data was cleaned up, temporary storage tents were erected, hundreds of running meters and old shelves were dismantled to make room for the new delivery area. 17,000 items have to be physically relocated in order to then be repositioned in the new automated warehouse,” says Claudia Zoff, outlining the most important milestones of the project.
65 years of ALPEN-MAYKESTAG
From a trading company to an internationally active innovation leader in the field of drilling and milling tools – a success story.
Max Reischl founded a trading company for tools in the city of Salzburg 65 years ago. Customs barriers as well as the availability and competitive advantages of suppliers from Germany made the company founder decide to produce in Austria himself. It was founded in the former nationalized industry in search of know-how, employees and production sites. The first technological basis of the “Alpen” drills goes back to the Steyr works. They also bought the first production machines.
48 years ago, the “ALPEN” production site was established on the Styrian Eisenstraße in St. Gallen, where there was potential for qualified employees. This laid the foundation for the factory and the production machines from Steyr were moved there. In the following steps, the factory pursues the competence center for the production of drills for all substrates (metal, concrete, stone, wood, glass, ceramics), making it unique in the industry. In 2016, the plant in St. Gallen, which currently employs more than 140 people, was expanded by 5.2 million euros and the production area expanded by 2,500 m². The takeover of Kestag (Kärntner Eisen und Stahl AG in Ferlach) and the German conglomerate Mai resulted in the “MAYKESTAG” brand in the 1990s, under which special drills and milling tools for industry are developed and manufactured.
Today, ALPEN-MAYKESTAG stands for “Made in Austria” and carries Austrian innovative strength paired with product quality on all continents of the world.
“Today, ALPEN-MAYKESTAG is not only Austria’s leading manufacturer of drilling and milling tools, we are the only ones who offer drills and milling cutters for processing a wide variety of materials – and that in absolute top quality. Our products are manufactured exclusively in Austria. This is the only way we can consistently guarantee the highest quality. Regional added value is therefore part of our DNA,” says Claudia Zoff.
With 350 employees, sales of 53.4 million euros (+ 5.5% compared to pre-Corona sales) were achieved in the 2020/2021 financial year. The products from the “high-tech” forge are in high demand internationally and are delivered to over 90 countries worldwide. The export rate of the family business is 80%. More than 1,200 tons of steel, 90 percent of which is sourced from Austria and ten percent from Germany for quality and sustainability reasons, are processed annually at the production sites in St. Gallen and Ferlach. As a result, around 120,000 pieces of high-quality drilling and milling tools are produced every day, that’s 30 million pieces a year. The wide range of products includes around 17,000 items. Under the brand “ALPEN” the specialized trade, the handicraft and trade with precision tools are Faithert. High-performance tools for the metalworking industry such as the automotive industry, aircraft technology, measurement technology and mechanical engineering etc. are sold under the “MAYKESTAG” brand.
