Roberta Metsola presented a work of art on migration
During her last visit to Malta, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola was presented with a painting representing the theme of migration.
The painting Refugees by Maltese artist Ray Piscopo reflects and incorporates the pursuit of refugees fleeing their homeland.
The artist presented the painting to Metsola at the European Parliament’s Liaison Office in Valletta.
Piscopo, known for his use of color, says his goal with Refugees was to express the idea of the search for a promised land that guarantees the freedom, joy and prosperity experienced by many refugees fleeing their homeland.
The painting is said to encode the many layers of emotions surrounding the escape event faced by many migrants.
The figures highlight a rough atmosphere– Ray Piscopo
“Those emotions are felt today by people fleeing their homes, fighting against oppression. They are the same emotions that have accompanied and continue to accompany human masses outside Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and today also from Ukraine, ”says Piscopo.
Piscopo says that his painting “gives life” to a chaotic mass of silhouettes with pop echoes shown in the painting.
“The figures, which move against an amber background scattered with red flushes, highlight a harsh atmosphere. They lose their individual gender characteristics and ethnicities and are instead standardized under a linear, decisive and marked characteristic, with the same mood and feelings, ”he explains.
The artist emphasizes that the lack of detail present in the painting is intended to highlight the universal emotions of fear, despair and uncertainty that unite each migrant in one place.
