Pedestrian zone for pedestrians again? The Brno municipality is once again tightening the rules for the entry of cars into the center | iRADIO
From July 1, there should be fewer cars in the pedestrian zone in the center of Brno. More strict rules for entering Freedom Square will apply. Cars only get there in the morning and afternoon, then not at all. The city police will supervise it.

Entry to Freedom Square will only be permitted from 6 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Then no one will go there except the fire brigade, ambulance or vehicles of the transport company, possibly the disabled and garbage collectors.
Brno once again has strict rules for entering pedestrian zones in the city center. There will be police officers patrolling the square, not even taxis will be allowed inside. Exceptions are, for example, paramedics or the police
Shared cars and taxis won’t even get there, which taxi drivers consider a bad decision. The drivers will be monitored by city police for about three months before the municipality buys cameras to monitor the cars.
Director of the Brno Police Department, Luboš Oprchal, says that his colleagues will return cars without authorization. “New traffic signs should be added at the entrance from Rašínovy and Masarykovy streets, which will newly separate the area of the pedestrian zone, which refers to Náměstí Svobody and the immediate vicinity of Česká, Zámečnická and Středová streets. We will ensure that no one who does not have authorization really enters the space,” Oprchal describes.
If it will be necessary to tighten entrances in other streets (for example in Kobližná, Poštovská or Josefská), where drivers do not show up and often appear, the municipality will proceed with the tightening, according to councilor Petr Kratochvíl (ODS).

What about drivers who use a street in the historic city center to park where it is not allowed? The municipality wants, for example, to increase the fine for placing and removing the so-called boot. According to Oprchal, however, it is not yet clear when exactly that will be.
“Currently, the fee is set at 400 crowns, the city is considering increasing it. So far, it’s only in the planning stage, so it won’t happen in the near future,” says the police chief.
Change in law
The Brno councilor also claims that, through his colleagues in the Chamber of Deputies, he will try to push for a change in the law so that the police can tow cars away from the pedestrian zone, which, according to the policemen’s interpretation, is not possible unless they block traffic in it.
In the same way, they will try to enforce a change in the administrative regulations, which allows fines for one offense to be combined, which the most impudent drivers use, and then pay a maximum of 2,500 crowns for several offences.
The editors of Czech Radio drew attention to these problems two years ago, politicians are promising a solution only now. In the meantime, the municipality introduced several strictures, but they were not sufficient.
Exception for residents
The municipality will continue to issue short-term authorizations in case of moving, but there will probably be only a minimum of them. According to the municipality’s office, about 1,000 cars pass through Náměstí Svobody every day. Of these, 200 taxis, 200 local residents, 150 company cars and the rest are other groups such as supplies or services and the disabled. 11,000 cars can drive into the historic center and 5,000 cars directly into the pedestrian zones.
