Redesign plans for Mozartplatz and Waagplatz

The Mozartplatz in the state capital, which will soon be redesigned, may have a gravel surface similar to Residenzplatz and also a fountain. The adjacent Waagplatz is also being redesigned.
The two old town squares will not necessarily be redesigned to have the same appearance, which was discussed at the information desk for residents on Thursday evening. The Waagplatz could be provided with stone slabs or asphalt, without sidewalks and without demarcated sidewalk cafés, for which the city planners named seating as a possibility. The biggest difference, however, would be to unseal the current unsightly asphalt patchwork, says Christian Bratka, project coordinator at the municipal building department.
Climate crisis: Bright asphalt is not the goal
“You can imagine parts of Mozartplatz in the form of gravel, but light-colored asphalt, like on Kajetanerplatz, is also a possibility. But this is not the last resort to implement new designs that could solve the micro-climate crisis in the old town area,” says Building Director Bratka.
Trees for Waagplatz and Mozartplatz
The climate-friendliness of Waagplatz and Mozartplatz will go even further, so trees on both squares are decisive in the architectural competition, according to city politicians. “Trees have to be able to grow and grow here,” says the responsible city councilor for construction, Martina Berthold (citizens’ list).
What will happen to 25 parking spaces at Waagplatz?
It is unclear how the approximately 25 parking spaces at Waagplatz will continue. The winner of the architectural competition for both places should be known before Christmas. About 40 residents, mostly business people, came to the information event on Thursday evening.
