According to current information, there were 13 patients in serious condition, nine last Thursday. The last time they were there was on May 24. The daily increase in cases started to be higher in the week-on-week comparison at the beginning of June, and in the last week they exceeded one thousand on all working days.
According to the Ministry of Health, the number of infected people due to the more contagious subvariants of the virus will increase for several more weeks. However, it does not plan measures against the spread of the disease, because it does not fill hospitals and especially intensive care units.
It is most widespread in Prague
The incid number decreased during the June Bank Holiday, but started to rise again on Thursday. In the past seven days, there are now 51 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants in the Czech Republic, compared to 53 a week ago.
The infection is currently spreading the most in the capital, where the incidence is 114. In all other regions, the incidence number is well below one hundred. In the Olomouc region, there are 28 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants, which is the lowest in the country.
Over the past seven days, laboratories in the Czech Republic performed over 29,000 PCR and antigen tests, about 4,300 less than the previous week. Currently, according to experts, only people with more serious symptoms are tested, and the number of infected people in the population is actually much higher. In the most common diagnostic tests for people who show symptoms of the disease, almost a third of those tested are positive on Thursday.
The significant viral load is evidenced not only by the significant positivity of the tests, but also by the analysis of waste water in Prague. According to experts from the University of Chemistry and Technology (VŠCHT), they show an extremely steep increase in the virus, exceeding the highest values from previous peaks of the epidemic.

A more contagious sub-variant
According to the State Health Institute (SZÚ), the current increase is due to the more contagious BA.4 or BA.5 subvariants of the omikron coronavirus. Although they do not have a worse course of the disease, they are more than ten times more contagious than the original version from Wuhan, China.
Against the subvariants, even after a few months, experiencing the disease or being vaccinated against infection is less protective, but vaccines further reduce the risk of death or hospitalization with a serious course. That is why the Ministry of Health recommends seniors and the chronically ill to get revaccinated before autumn.
In the last seven days, over 4,600 people were vaccinated against covid, the vast majority came for a booster dose. The first week of the holiday, when many people took time off, there was much less interest in vaccinations than the previous week. Almost 6.9 million people in the Czech Republic have completed their vaccinations, over 4.2 million of them have so far arrived for revaccination.
Since the start of the epidemic in March 2020, laboratories have confirmed over 3.9 million cases of covid, and the ministry registers almost 269,300 suspected cases of repeated infection. 40,330 people have died from the coronavirus so far, there have been nine deaths in the last week.
