Speaker of the Lower House, Abdul Karim Al-Dughmi, hailed the deep-rooted ties, cooperation, coordination and dialogue between Jordan and the European Union (EU) with its three institutions: the European Commission, the Council European and the European Parliament.
He said the relationship between the two sides was strategic and strong, with Jordan seeing the EU as a major and strategic partner.
Addressing Jordan’s tenth parliamentary meeting with the European Parliament, which is currently being held at the European Parliament headquarters in the French city of Strasbourg, Al-Dughmi, who chairs the Jordanian delegation, expressed his satisfaction for the close cooperation with EU institutions and leaders, as well as for Member States.
The participation of the Jordanian parliamentary delegation in the meeting with the European Parliament is an opportunity to strengthen the Jordanian-European dialogue at the parliamentary level, which is a continuation of the previous meetings, Al-Dughmi added.
Al-Dughmi said EU support has helped address and alleviate the social and economic challenges Jordan faces due to conflicts and crises in the region and around the world.
The EU’s rapid response also contributed to helping Jordan cope with the Covid-19 pandemic by helping to provide vaccines, which helped protect citizens as well as refugees and residents of the Kingdom.
He added that support from the European Food Security Facility also played an important role in alleviating the burden of rising food prices.
Jordan, Al-Dughmi, is still facing aggravated social, economic and security challenges due to the impact of multiple crises in the region and around the world on the Kingdom, foremost among which is the Palestinian issue, the Syrian crisis , the rise in energy markets and food prices, the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukrainian crisis.
“Jordan is also aware of the challenges that Europe is facing due to the repercussions of these crises. At the same time, we appreciate the European commitment to maintain the same level of support provided to Jordan and to ensure that it is increased. in the future, which is of great importance in preserving the results of development and stability in Jordan and the region,” Al-Dughmi noted.
On Palestine, Daghmi said, “The failure to resolve the Palestinian issue, which is at the heart of the conflict in the region, constitutes a stumbling block on the road to stability and peace.”
He stressed the need to find a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian question and related issues, including Jerusalem, refugees, borders, security and water.
He noted the need to base a future solution to the Palestinian cause on the two-state solution which would create a Palestinian state on the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
“We reject any tampering with this situation through the so-called temporal and spatial division of the Al Aqsa Mosque in its entirety of 144 dunums, and we reaffirm the historical Hashemite guardianship of Islamic and Christian shrines in Jerusalem,” he said. he added.
He stressed that Jordan has strong international support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), adding that this support should continue to support six million refugees in its five areas. of operation.
Regarding the Syrian crisis, Daghmi said: “We in Jordan affirm our strong support for the territorial integrity of Syria, our rejection of outside interference and the need to ensure the voluntary return of refugees and displaced persons. in their places of residence”.
He welcomed the results of the sixth Brussels conference, held in May to generate funds for the Syrian people and host communities, noting that Jordan considers it necessary to work more to end the crisis.
He added that the decrease in funding for the national response plan to the Syrian crisis is negatively affecting refugees and host communities.
On the war in Ukraine, he said: The position on the Ukrainian crisis is clear and we continue to follow it with concern. We voted in favor of General Assembly resolutions and repeatedly stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty, stability and territorial integrity of States.”
The Middle East was not absent from the President’s programme. He said the region was suffering from multiple and complex crises, conflicts, wars and the fallout from climate change, noting that regional conflicts had a “profound” impact.
