Grid operator shows investment plans for electricity grid in the Netherlands
Grid operator TenneT will invest approximately 13 billion euros in national high-voltage onshore over the next ten years. The shovel is in the ground in every province, with work being done on more than 400 projects and the realization of more than 40 new high-voltage stations.
Less 2 billion will be spent on North Brabant and Limburg, where 30 of the 400 projects will take place. There are currently 10 in progress.
All this can be read in the adjusted investment plan of the national grid operator, which was published on Tuesday 5 July, in which additional analyzes were performed on the feasibility of the project portfolio and a transparent framework was used for prioritisation. The publication comes under the ACM earlier this year the Investment Plans have arisen and TenneT has ordered to ship its Investment Plan for the Grid on Land
The demand for capacity on the national high-voltage grid is high due to the rapid development of the energy transition and further future developments. Demand is growing due to the arrival of wind turbines, solar parks, charging stations, heat pumps and the sustainability plans of the industry. The capacity of the electricity grid must be doubled every ten years to meet demand.
Maarten Abbenhuis (COO TenneT): “We are emerging from an origin in which the climate ambitions are high and continue to grow. This clearly has major consequences for the electricity grid and the impact on TenneT’s investment portfolio. Security of supply in the Netherlands is very high and we want to keep it that way. That is why, next to all projects, there is a significant maintenance task to keep the existing grid reliable now and in the future. A challenge that calls for lean solutions and broad collaboration.”
The Investment Plan instructions contain an overview of major projects that TenneT will carry out in the coming years. TenneT will gain approximately two billion euros in North Brabant and Limburg. The national grid operators are going to split both provinces into 8 sub-areas, so that the electricity can be better supplied and removed to the national main grid. On many goals create a tripling of capacity. A number of new high-voltage substations are being built here.
Investment plans
National and regional grid operators each make two-year investment plans. These plans are intended to provide the regulator, the ministry, transactions and market parties with more insight into upcoming investments and projects. Planning the investments in the future that are expected in the coming years and the investments to be made to avoid. TenneT is making two separate plans: an Investment Plan for the Offshore Grid and an Investment Plan for the Onshore Grid. The Net op Zee investment plan was already used earlier this year. In addition to grid investments on land, TenneT has also been developing a completely new offshore grid for years to connect new offshore wind farms to land. In addition to the 13 billion for the net onshore, TenneT will develop approximately 9 billion in the offshore network in the Netherlands over the next ten years.
By preparing investment plans in advance, net managers provide transparency about future investments and their rationale. In this way, broad social developments in sustainability can be coordinated in the coming years.
