Father Vaz Pinto. AM de Lisboa recalls Priest as “unique figure” of the city and country – Observer
The Lisbon Municipal Assembly, having as guarantor the registration of Tuesday, a vote for the death of Father Vaz Pinto, who led by the “spirit of love for the Church”.
He was a unique figure in the city of Lisbon and Portugal, there were so many works that he idealized, innovated, pushed, fought and pushed, is mentioned in the vote of, by the Lisbon Municipal Assembly, chaired by Rosário Farmhouse (PS ), approved unanimously, with a minute of silence.
With relatives in Arouca, in the district of Aveiro, Father António Vaz Pinto was born in Lisbon roots, on June 2, 1942, and died on July 1, at the age of 80, at Hospital de Santa Maria, also in the capital, in prolonged illness sequence.
“In this vow of regret, we honor the man, the priest, the public figure, the friend, the neighbor. Recognize the personality of a full, informed and energetic life as “extroverted, brand that studies, informed, detached, perseveres”.
The deliberative body of the municipality of the capital of the country, specifically, that António Vaz Pinto was added to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in 2014 and High Commissioner for Migration and Ethnic Minorities, between 2002 and 2005, “an inspiring and willing, a communicator and storyteller, a man enthusiastic about life”.
“He led by example and service, by the spirit of mission, by love for the Church. He was restless, he was encouraged by the need to respond to the challenges of the time with demand and responsibility”, reads the vow of condolence, recalling the priest’s journey with a work of “high visibility”.
Indicating that the priest used the word “formidable” a lot, the municipal assembly defends: “This is the occasion to say — That the formidable life Father António Vaz Pinto lived!”
“Father António Vaz Pinto, through his life, made the world here”, considers the deliberative body of the municipality of Lisbon.
António Vaz Pinto was responsible for the creation and implementation of several works by the Society of Jesus, among which the Lay for Development (1986), the Centro São Cirilo (2002), in Porto, and the Centro Universitário Padre Manuel da Nóbrega stand out. (1975-1984), in Coimbra, and later the Padre António Vieira University Center (1984-1997), in Lisbon.
He was also rector of the Pedro Arrupe Community, in Braga, where the Jesuits form part of their formation, and also rector of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, in Póvoa do Varzim. He directed the Center for Reflection and University Meeting Inácio de Loyola, in Porto, was a national assistant of the Christian Life Community (CVX) and was also the president of the direction of the Social Center of Musgueira, in Lisbon.
António Vaz Pinto’s career also includes his participation in the creation of the Food Bank against Hunger, in 1992, and the role of High Commissioner for Migration and Ethnic Minorities, between 2002 and 2005.
On January 30, 2006, he was distinguished by the then President of the Republic, Jorge Sampaio, with the Official Grand Order Infante D. Henrique.
He has published books on theology, philosophy and Christian life, and two memoirs, where he tells the story of his life.
Father António Vaz Pinto was currently, and since 2019, in the Jesuit community in Évora, where he was chaplain of Santa Casa da Misericórdia.
