The glorious history of the maritime republics starts from Pisa a path to enhance them
Besides the regattas and the rowing palio, now the historical and artistic heritage that the Maritime Republics they keep will be preserved and enhanced to the fullest. This is what the protocol promoted by the General Committee dedicated to them promises.
Rivals for centuries in the dominion of the Mediterranean
Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice. Between the 10th and 13th centuries they dominated the Mediterranean. Thanks to trade and a favorable position, they gained independence and wealth, taking away the monopoly in the Mediterranean from the Arabs. They were always rivals: Amalfi, the oldest, was defeated by Pisa in 1135, in turn beaten by Genoa in the battle of Meloria in 1284, but, having become mistress of the Mediterranean, it was unable to win over Venice, the longest-lived of four republics.
Deep historical traces, traditions and popular rites remain from the history of the ladies of the seas. Their coats of arms constitute the central emblem of the flag of the Italian Navy. Now the idea is to reinvigorate its splendor not only through the Palio Remiero, but also with other events dedicated and designed to deepen this long historical period.
The kitchen in Pisa
The accredited idea is to subscribe to the protocol in Pisa, during the 67 edition of the rowing Palio of the Ancient Maritime Republics, scheduled for Sunday 11 September 2022 on the waters of the Arno (the second in a year to recover the lost edition in 2020). It will then be the turn of Venice in 2023, of Genoa in 2024 (on the occasion of the celebrations for the European Capital of Sport) and then Amalfi in 2025.
And just a month ago the 66th Regatta took place in Amalfi, with the victory of the hosts. A record edition, starting from the attendance that crowded the city over 22 thousand people from all over the world.
