The Australian rocker returns after four years in front of eleven thousand enthusiastic spectators. The live one hour late due to pouring rain
“Can you hear the heartbeat?” he repeats it two, three, four, five times. And, really, in the ancient theater it seems to hear a gigantic beat cardiac. It is the momentum of the more than two hours of yet another successful concert by Nick Caveback to Italy later four years. And at the Verona Arena, after passing through Taranto a few days ago. And to say that fate has not been generous with the lately Australian rockerdepriving him of another son, Jethro in May, after the tragedy seven years ago when Arthur died falling from a cliff.
But Cave can only exorcise with what he does best, to sing, or rather to feed on affection, on warmth, on carnality with its ever loyal audience. The evening, however, had not started very well: one heavy rain disastrous the baptism of the show, causing an hour of delay at the expected start. And once it has begun, on the excited Sabbath of “Get ready for love”, the always lean 64-year-old felt a little uncomfortable. Even though the beautiful Arena, there are seated spectators and one empty space separates the stage from the audience.
A dynamic that Nick doesn’t like. That he said it himself: he has always been looking for physicality spectators (eleven thousand in Verona), sing on them, embrace them, whirling mephistophelically hands and legs. And then, at a certain point, he thought about it: on the epic “From her to eternity”he threw himself in the middle of the front rows, rising above them and immediately unleashing the delirium in the Arena. The concert had therefore started: from that moment Nick will take turns stabbing passages on the piano (in “O Children” and “I Need You”, references to lost children were as evident as they appeared almost cry in singing) to literal dives in the crowd as in the old rides of “Tupelo” or “Red Right Hand”, where one climbed even on the steps. And come San Daniele domesticated definitively the Arena then on «Higgs Boson Blues».
Always accompanied by the wisdom of Bad seeds and of the three good singers, with the old and bearded companion Warren Ellis flawless in passing nonchalantly from one instrument to another. It was the prologue toobsessive ending of «Città del Rifugio» (You better run, better run) and the persuasive sadness of “In my arms”: because pain and joy ran and exchanged meloncholy and wildness, a supreme mix of emotions, of life and death that this wiry rock poet has given us for years. And he still he does not stop doing. Can you hear the heartbeat? Yup, we heard ithere I am.
