Heavy rains finally hit Slovakia. Storms are heading east
During today, the weather in our territory is affected by a cold front, which brings heavier precipitation in western and central Slovakia, while the tide of warm air peaks in the east and storms are coming.
The heat wave is ending. While it is still relatively warm in eastern Slovakia and there are tropical heat waves, i.e. temperatures above +30 °C, in western and central Slovakia the weather has been predominantly cloudy, cloudy and rainy since the morning.
The cold area of the front, which is currently waving over ours, is to blame. Ahead of it, a tide of warm air is peaking over the east, while colder air is slowly pushing into the west and center of the country.
It is rainy in the west
After a long time, western and north-western Slovakia finally saw significant rainfall, which brings much-needed moisture. So far, it is nothing significant, but from a meteorological point of view, it is finally a more significant, widespread and longer-lasting precipitation.
So far, the most severe fall is in Záhoria at Holíč station, where 50 mm is already recorded. However, it should be noted that the vast majority of precipitation fell during the storm, so the precipitation ran into the basin relatively quickly and was not absorbed by the ground.
Heavier amounts of rain fell, for example, in the center of Bratislava, almost 35 mm. In other places of western Slovakia, 5 to 15 mm of rain fell, but locally even over 20 mm of rain. At the same time, the precipitation is not over yet, and further precipitation is also occurring in the west.
Storms await the east
While it is already cooling down in western and central Slovakia and the temperature drops below +20 °C, the front continues to move to the east, which is now expecting storms and gradually rain.
The most significant storms are currently forming in the Gemera region and are moving towards the metropolis of eastern Slovakia above Košice. Other storms are forming in the far east.
So far, the storms have brought only about 200 lightnings, but as the hours go by, it should be expected that there will be much more precipitation and storms in the east. Their development and progress watch HERE.
