Since 8 a.m. this morning and until the same time tomorrow, the emergency paramedics at the Toulouse University Hospital have been on strike. At Purpan, the service is like this limited to vital emergencies led by the Samu. This social was initiated a month ago by the CGT and SUD who are calling for nearly 90 job creations to compensate for “unacceptable working conditions”. “It is not a question of asking for salary increases”, points out Pauline Salingue, specialized educator and CGT delegate at the Toulouse University Hospital.
The movement will continue
This weekend and for the first time since the beginning of the movement, the management of the establishment nevertheless made a gesture towards the strikers. It offers them the hiring of 16 people in the adult emergencies of Purpan, 9 in the adult emergencies of Rangueil and 6 in the psychiatric emergencies. “This progress is not a gift that fell from heaven, it is the fruit of three weeks of mobilization“, welcomes the trade unionist. The latter does not release the pressure and announces a new strike “in the next few days”, without further details.
A communication battle
Not only is the situation perhaps not moving forward, but a communication battle start to escalate it. On the one hand, the management considers that “the posture of the unions weakens the care” and the office of the establishment medical commission expresses “its deepest concern about the medical risks generated for the Toulouse population” strikers, by the voice of Pauline Salingue, saying that “they are fighting for preserve the health of Toulouse residents » and denounce « the criminality of those who have been destroying the hospital for twenty years ».
The delegate wants in particular to prove the figures for the workforce of the Toulouse University Hospital which have increased, since 2014, from 11,441 to 11,471 agents, or 30 more in 8 years. “How many tens of thousands of people came to settle in Toulouse during this same period? she asks.
“The headlong rush” of the public hospital
While the establishment is now forced to call on retired staff to ensure a minimum service in emergencies, Pauline Salingue evokes “a headlong rush”. “Are they planning to run tomorrow’s hospital with retirees? she asks. Before pointing out a sad paradox:
“The flash commission to save the hospital recommends closing the ER at night and triaging patients. That’s exactly what happens when we go on strike. And we’re called murderers.”
