The skate park in the Georgengarten will be renewed and become the “SkateKidsArea”
The skate park in Georgengarten (Lodyweg / corner of Jägerstraße) is being renovated and will become the “SkateKidsArea” in the future.
At the beginning of July, the preparatory work begins by the city’s own training company “Gardening and Landscaping” in the Department of Environment and City Green. First, the dilapidated asphalt surface will be removed and disposed of, and the new modeling of the substructure layers will be made, before the actual construction of the skate concrete park begins in August. Completion is expected in October.
The total construction costs are around 230,000 euros.
The approximately 450 square meter asphalt surface, which has been in place since 1998, has weathered badly over time and the road surface has become rougher. The almost flat surface offers little incentive to ride skateboards, scooters or inline skates.
Since 2018, an initiative of parents and active people from the roller sports scene in Hanover has been campaigning for a renewal of the facility in order to create an attractive skate park in a central, sheltered location. The target group is primarily children and beginners in skateboarding, inline skating and scooter sports.
In a three-year planning process, a concept for a new, compact facility was developed in close cooperation with the “ProSkateKidsArea” initiative. With a surface made of in-situ concrete, varied, organic shapes with simple and conical, low slopes are formed. They are intended to enable smooth driving movements in the future. Only small height differences of usually no more than 70 cm are planned. In addition to a central plateau, three elevated, arc-shaped pedestal levels are created on the sides, which are bordered by grassy slopes.
Since the area is located in the listed Georgengarten of the Herrenhausen Gardens, the planning had to be adapted to the sensible garden environment.
The result of this planning, which has been coordinated with the initiative, WILL be a modern skating facility that is primarily geared towards the requirements of children and beginners and thus enables them to start skateboarding, inline skating or scooters with little risk. Due to its special design, the “SkateKidsArea” will be a highlight in the urban range of sports and exercise facilities in public space.
