Pictures from back then – staged today. This is the task faced by 15 photographers from the Fotohof in the city of Salzburg. The result can be seen in the book “SalzburgBilder”, which was awarded the Austrian State Prize.
The award-winning photo book with the Salzburg pictures shows photos by 15 photo artists – inspired by historical material from the Salzburg open-air museum.
The photo artist Stefanie Pirker documents rural life on farms near the city: “I was mainly occupied with the cow. I saw in historical photos that a lot of cows were shown. I looked into the question of what this farm animal means to us and wanted to know how we show that in today’s society.”
Photo artist Nadine Weixler complements her work on urban development – especially the single-family house: “For me, the single-family house is a phenomenon that interested me. Some things just make you curious. Like who lives in it.”

Fotohof has already published 340 books
In its 40 years of existence, the Fotohof has already published 340 books, and has even had its own publishing house for the past 20 years. Now he has also been awarded the Austrian State Prize, awarded by the Ministry of Culture for the “Salzburg Pictures”. Fotohof publisher Rainer Iglar: “There are hundreds of submissions for this prize. If you get into the final selection of the 15 most beautiful books, that’s a sensational success. To finish in the last three with a cash prize attached to it is wonderful.”
Photo artist Kurt Kaindl adds: “I see it this way that the graphic designers and also the publishers staged and presented our pictures so well that they are worthy of an award. So that means that my pictures actually got better because they were published in this book.” The state prize is endowed with 3,000 euros.
