What does Krakow have in common with Copernicus and the Meridian?

Although Nicolaus Copernicus is associated with Toruń or Frombork, his height is not similar to Kraków. First of all, it was in this city, at the Krakow Academy, that he studied astronomy. Secondly, even the second, when he had already left Krakow, the astronomer’s measurements were made on the basis of the clue indicated by this city. In the groundbreaking work “On the revolutions of the spheres”, ten service four is expected and is a blue service turn proving that the Earth circulates to, not the other way around.

To remind about “Polish Greenwich”

Today, the Krakow prime meridian is an almost forgotten object. No wonder, since it begins to appear on maps in the 19th century. And yet he has already climbed 500 years before the most famous in Greenwich and 300 years before the meridian in Paris.

The memory of him has long been the seat of the surveyor Mariusz “Honorary Meridian of Krakow”. It was on his initiative in the meridian of 2019 the measurements of the Jagiellonian University, current geodesy on the initiative of Krakow to 19 ° 57′21.237E. Thus, ten sites were restored on the city maps after nearly 150 years.

Where exactly is this meridian? Going from the north, it runs through such places of Krakow as: Kuźnica Kołłątajowska, OZON, areas of Górka Narodowa, overpass. General Tadeusz Rozwadowski, the park on ul. Celarowska, Rakowicki Cemetery, University of Economics, Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University, Galeria Kazimierz, Liban quarry, roundabout at CH Bonarka, Witosa Street and Kurdwanów Park.

Mariusz Meus argues that this meridian is an object not only for the country, but also the world. Therefore, it is necessary to enforce its course in the city by making residents aware of how to reveal their lives for astronomy and geosia. For example, the fact that it was in the Krakow meridian that the unit – meter – created by Stanisław Pudłowski 150 years before the “metro created”, was born out of today’s unit.

The first place where the Kraków meridian was marked was the pocket park at ul. Celarowska. But that’s just the beginning. Mariusz Meus announces many other initiatives that will remind the inhabitants of Krakow of this unique facility in various ways. The Copernicus Year, celebrated until the year of their implementation, will be an occasion to show the anniversary.

Where exactly will we see the meridian?

As Meus lists, this year as part of the second civic development of Krakow routes modeled on the popular Wroclaw dwarfs. The author’s presentation will be a sculpture of the dragon geodesy by Andrzej Mleczko and Edward Lutczyn, set on the meridian next to one of the schools. Next to it, to the south, there is a QR code that will tell the story and its location after the return.

– Also this year, the website will mark the line of the Krakow meridian at the starting point of the astronomical observatory in the botanical garden of the Jagiellonian University, at Kopernika Street. Bearing in mind that the alternator Biały and the local OZON are determined by their place of proximity to the Krakow meridian. Otherwise, in the next year, the park has been discovered in its entirety by the great Kury Park in Kraków. All this has a swegous route to the Krakow meridian – explains Mariusz Me. He adds that there are also plans for an application for a field game and traces of “Polish Greenwich” throughout Krakow.

– Individual elements of the “meridian route” are checked by various institutions and institutions, including personal ones, but always on the initiative of the Honorary Meridian of Krakow campaign – explains Mariusz Meus. – Ultimately, the trail is to be formally entered on the list of tourist attractions of the city of Krakow as an element of the trail of monuments of science and technology – he announces.
