Experts say the risk of smallpox spreading in the general population is low. The infection is transmitted through long-term or close contact, for example sexual.
Transmission is possible through spores from smallpox blisters or body fluids, infection is also possible through clothing or bedding. Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache and a skin rash that usually appears on the face and then spreads to the rest of the body.
The first cases of monkeypox outside the countries where it normally occurs in Central and West Africa began to appear in mid-May. The World Health Organization (WHO) records thousands of cases outside these countries, especially in the USA and Europe.
