Further debate about “S-Link” in the city senate
politics
The Salzburg city leaders discussed the planned route for the underground “S-Link” from the main station to Mirabellplatz on Monday. The projected extension of the local railway through the city has recently attracted increasing criticism. The SPÖ in particular expressed concerns and moved away from the area.
From 2 p.m. on Monday, the city senate of the state capital will have its penultimate session before the summer break. And the city’s politicians have also made a number of plans for this: the agenda is 32 points long. The gap with a significant topic is quite far behind at number 22: It’s about nothing less than the future of transport, not only in the city of Salzburg, but also in the entire surrounding area. At least that’s how it convinces the ÖVP, which operates the “S-Link” project to a large extent.
SPÖ against the project, Greens and FPÖ for it
Resistance comes from the SPÖ: too many questions are unanswered, especially how to proceed after the first section from the train station to Mirabellplatz. According to the Social Democrats of the city of Salzburg, both the schedule and the cost estimate are utopian and unrealistic. Therefore, they do not want to agree to the “S-Link” project for the time being.
At the moment, however, they are alone in this. The ÖVP and the Greens are sticking to the project and the FPÖ is also on board: there are many unanswered questions, says Andreas Reindl – for the Blue Party in the city senate, but the project should be put on track, also to ensure that the federal government participates in financing .
It is still completely open whether there WILL be a citizen survey on the city subway. City SPÖ boss Bernhard Auinger assumes such a survey. However, there is currently no sign of a political initiative for this.
